Chand Raat(Tehwaar)

Chand Raat (Urdu ???? ???, literally, Night of the Moon) is a festival celebrated in Pakistan for the eve of the Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Fitr. As the beginning ?of an Islamic month depends on the first sighting of the lunar crescent, the ?month of Ramadan can be of either 29 or 30 days. The term Chaand Raat refers ?to the evening on which first lunar crescent of the month of Shawwal is observed.

Observing The New Moon

The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of Pakistan is responsible for the official moon sighting. The committee has representativies in all parts of the country to observe the new moon towards the final minutes of the last fast of Ramadan.
New Moon Not Sighted
If the new moon is not been sighted, the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will officially declare another day of fasting. The day after (most probably) the new moon will be sighted and Eid-ul-Fitr will be declared.

Celebration

Celebrations begin across Pakistan almost immediately after the new moon has been sighted. After breaking the last fast and praying Maghrib, families and friends will most likely gather at each other's homes, which has usually been planned out in advance. People wish each other Chand Raat Mubarak ("Have a blessed night of the new moon") or Eid Mubarak ("Blessings of the Eid day"). Women and girls will decorate their hands with mehndi, and people prepare sweets and food for the next day of Eid. In 2009, an estimated 1 billion text messages were exchanged following Chand Raat and Eid-ul-Fitr decelerations. Usually the streets begin to fill as the night progresses. Many go out to prepare for the next day (Eid-ul-Fitr), however it has become a tradition to come out and celebrate with others. In larger cities, whole roads will be covered with people, such as Liberty Market in Lahore or Tariq Road in Karachi. City streets across Pakistan will have a festive look. There are usually brightly decorated markets and buildings. Restaurants and stores remain open late into the night for shoppers needs for the next day Eid. Chand Raat is celebrated festively and passionately by Muslims in Pakistan.
