Today, most of the CPU uses the latest cores technology (i.e. dual core, quad core, hexa core and octa core etc.). Cores are basically complete independent units of a processor. Processors are named according to their numbers of cores; dual core means two cores processor and so on. So once the number of cores is high, the performance and task handling will be more faster. Use of multi core processor in smartphones has some cost associated with it because it gives some power and with great power comes great responsibility.

“What do you think simply increasing number of cores of a processor will boost smartphones’ performance or not?”

Question Description:

Today, most of the CPU uses the latest cores technology (i.e. dual core, quad core, hexa core and octa core etc.). Cores are basically complete independent units of a processor. Processors are named according to their numbers of cores; dual core means two cores processor and so on. So once the number of cores is high, the performance and task handling will be more faster. Use of multi core processor in smartphones has some cost associated with it because it gives some power and with great power comes great responsibility. 

What do you think simply increasing number of cores of a processor will boost smartphones’ performance or not?”

Simply increase number of cores of a processor will not boost the performance of Smart-phones.

Reasons:

  • If we just increase the number of cores  may be not supported by system. Because the circuit in which the processor installed is not updated then processor will no perform the required functionality.
  • If we simply increase the number of cores and not increase the RAM or Cache then also performance in not increased. For example if we use octa core with 256MB RAM then the overall  system will not give the required performance.
  •  If we just increase the number of cores and not use the big.Little or any efficient architecture then also performance not achieved. May be caused by heating, battery timing problems and etc.  

If any mistake in gpd. kindly tell me.

According to my knowledge  if we increase the cores of the processor will boost Smartphone’s   performance .core in the processor is in fact a processing unit that stand for reading the instruction to perform the specification  actions. If there are more core/ processing unit then you can perform all your action at the same time quickly. So if the higher numbers of processor allows your phone to processor greedy like 3D gaming photo editing HD videos at the same time smoothly .more core in the processor  will helpful in running such apps which are rather  intensive and require a lot of resources. But sometime this thing is not true because technology is complicated. More cores are great but only if you can keep them busy .if we simply add more cores in the processor and ignore other thing like Smartphone’s hardware, software and system then we not achieved the goal. If we just increase the number of cores may be not supported by system. Because the circuit in which the processor installed is not updated then processor will no perform the essential functionality. We simply increase the number of cores and not increase the RAM or Cache then also performance in not better. If we just increase the number of cores and not use the big little or any efficient architecture then also performance not achieves. At a basic level you need any software that runs on that hardware, both in terms of the OS and the apps that run on it, to be optimized for a multi-core approach. If that software isn't set up to run across all of these extra cores, then the benefits will be negligible at best.

SOLUTION:
Device wishing to perform DMA asserts the processors bus request signal.
Processor completes the current bus cycle and then asserts the bus grant signal to the device.
The device then asserts the bus grant ack signal.
The processor senses in the change in the state of bus grant ack signal and starts listening to the data and address bus for DMA activity.
The DMA device performs the transfer from the source to destination address.
During these transfers, the processor monitors the addresses on the bus and checks if any location modified during DMA operations is cached in the processor. If the processor detects a cached address on the bus, it can take one of the two actions:
Processor invalidates the internal cache entry for the address involved in DMA write operation
Processor updates the internal cache when a DMA write is detected
Once the DMA operations have been completed, the device releases the bus by asserting the bus release signal.
Processor acknowledges the bus release and resumes its bus cycles from the point it left off.
