Bottleneck Operations

Learning Objective: Theobjective of this discussion is to make the students able to read research and analyze the information on the concept of theory of constraints and bottleneck operations and to understand how it hinders the productivity of the whole process.

Scenario:

The theory of constraints deals with identification and removal of hindering factor towards optimal productivity. The major focus of the theory of constraints is to improve quality and enhancing production through controlled processes. Such constraints exist in routine production processes and are faced by services and manufacturing organizations during the entire course of their production. An important production constraint is the “bottleneck” which is defined as a process in a chain of processes that limits the overall capacity of the whole chain.

Discussion Question:

Based on the knowledge gained from this course and web research on the theory of constraints, answer the following question:

Q1: Why do bottleneck operations exist in production processes? Mention at least TWO reasons.

Q2: What is your stance on how a bottleneck operation reduces the overall capacity of production in a system? Mention at least TWOreasons.
