AOA; congratulations on getting 3+ in your exams. I hope you have also noticed the welcome message from our Rector Sir. Naveed A. Malik, in which he mentioned that VU will now implement the relative grading policy endorsed by HEC.
Some of the students are really excited after seeing their result and some are worried that awarding number in this manner can devalue VU’s degree. As we all are affected by this new grading system so I did some digging, here are my findings:
Excerpt from HEC’s “Implementation of Semester System in Higher Education Institutions of Pakistan” document
Relative Grading System:
Relative grading allows for screening students according to their performance relative to their peers. In relative grading a histogram of total marks obtained by all students is taken and ranges for assigning various grades are decided for awarding the grades. These “ranges” for assigning grades are based on upper limit of percentage of students in a course that can have a particular grade.
It also establishes minimum achievement standards linked to the content mastery and then calculate numbers of As, Bs and Cs etc., based on the curve tied to the students’ performance relative to their peers.

Here is the explanation; in relative grading boundaries are defined for each level. For example the top 10% will have A, the 20% below that will get B and so on. Therefore, relative grading is more dynamic and no fixed passing marks are needed. Relative grading is also good for assessing the students’ overall performance but on the downside it can also have some consequences too.
For example; if the overall class is very good and in a class it might be that 10 people score above 90% but since they cannot give a lot of As, those who score from 96% to 98% will only get As, while those scoring between 93% to 96% will get B+ and B falls between 90% to 92%. So even if you score that well in a test, you might end up getting a B. On the other hand, if the overall class is very bad, then there will be a lot of people who will get “A” grade even though they know nothing about the topic.
In the end I will just say because now you are competing with each other and every one of you is now affecting the grading of others, therefore, take steps wisely. For example, in past you may have shared your study notes with your friends but now sharing such material with your friends mean you are bringing a serious competition for yourself. Happy learning
