Population growth

In biology or human geography, population growth is the increase in the number of individuals in a population. Many nations with rapid population growth have low standards of living, whereas many nations with low rates of population growth have high standards of living.

Types of population growth

Exponential population growth

Exponential Population Growth. When resources are unlimited, a population can experience exponential growth, where its size increases at a greater and greater rate. In exponential growth, the population’s growth rate increases over time, in proportion to the size of the population.

Logistic population growth occurs when the growth rate decreases as the population reaches carrying capacity.

In exponential growth, a population's per capita (per individual) growth rate stays the same regardless of population size, making the population grow faster and faster as it gets larger

In logistics growth, a population's per capita growth rate gets smaller and smaller as population size approaches a maximum imposed by limited resources in the environment, known as

the carrying capacity (K)
