Cinque Terre Italy Travel Guide - Hike and Dive

Cinque Terre Italy Travel Guide Hike and Dive

If this summer you looking for your next traveling destination where you can hike the mountains as well as dive into to beautiful ocean. The Cinque Terre probably the best option to visit with your family and friends. This beautiful place in Italy is easily accessible from Pisa, Milan, and La Spezia, you can enjoy the attraction of Cinque Terre all by foot on hiking trails run along the clifs, boats andfrequent trains. However, the hiking trails aren't just a leisurely stroll - some take you up thousands of stairs through private vineyards and residences and can be particularly brutal under the hot summer sun.

Cinque Terre means five mainland, is one of the locations are tucked away in a long list of UNESCO Heritage consisting of five villages, namely: Menterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. The area has avoided modern development and as result, has retained its unique Italian culture and natural beauty. Over centuries, people have carefully built terraces on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the sea. The rugged villages of the Cinque Terre, founded by Dark Age locals hiding out from marauding pirates, were long cut off from the modern world.

Five Villages of Cinque Terre:

Monterosso is the beach stop. The only village of the 5 with a long beach stretching the length of it, and the only one that is built on moderately flat land.

Vernazza is the gem of the bunch with its perfectly placed cities and its caressing harbour protecting it from the breaking waves.

Corniglia is the tiniest of the 5 but definitely holding the title of the cutest. Perched atop a steep V shaped portion of mountain, it hugs the corners and the roads wind steeply upwards.

Manarolo is the old man of the group. He is the original village out of the 5 and has cascading wine terraces peeking out above the houses. It shares the famous pathway called La Via dell’Amore – The Way of Love – with its neighbour Manarolo. This pathway joined the two cities for better trading, but became a famous spot for the youth to mingle. Today you can see locks engraved with two lovers names alone the entire pathway.

Finally we have Riomaggiore. The city of Murals. Each wall is painted in a mural to depict the history of the people who live there; the wine growers, the fisherman, and the transporters. All brightly coloured.

Cinque Terre, Italy
The Cinque Terre is a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera. It is in the Liguria region of Italy, to the west of the city of La Spezia. Wikipedia

Cinque Terre (five lands) Italy: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore

The Cinque Terre (Five Lands) is a string of five fishing villages perched high on the Italian Riviera (region Liguria ) which until recently were linked only by mule tracks and accessible only by rail or water. An ancient system of footpaths is still the best way to visit the five villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.

The Cinque Terre is noted for its beauty. Over centuries, people have carefully built terraces to cultivate grapes and olives on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the Mediterranean Sea. The breathtaking views of harbours far below the wild but hospitable coastline along with the medieval fortresses and plentiful vines and vibrant colours make this a memorable holiday.

The Cinque Terre, recognized in 1997 by the Unesco Mankind's World Heritage, are today a National Park and Protected Marine Area with the aim of protecting this great cultural heritage and natural environment.

Monterosso is the largest of the five coastal villages collectively known as the Cinque Terre. The village is located on hills cultivated with vines and olives. The vegetation surrounds the built-up area like an embrace; its amazing beaches, its beautiful reefs and the sea’s crystal clear waters make this small village one of the most hospitable of the Ligurian Riviera.

The village is divided in two parts marked by the medieval tower of Aurora. The new part of town, Fegina, is full of life, it is the reflection of an area that tourism has made rich, as the great quantity and excellent quality of hotels and restaurants give evidence.

Fegina is dominated by the famous concrete statue of the Giant, built beside the terrace of a local villa. This statue was created at the beginning of the XX century by Levacher and Minerbi, an architect and a sculptor, and represents Neptune, the god of the sea. Now it has become the symbol of Monterosso.

The old town of Monterosso is dominated by the ruins of the castle and characterized by typical narrow medieval streets carruggi with multi-coloured terraced houses. The beach is the only extensive sand beach in the Cinque Terre and runs along most of the coast line and is well used by tourists and locals.

Things to visit:

• The Church of San Giovanni Battista, located in the main square of the old town. This church was constructed in the 1200s, in the Gothic-Genovese style. Inside, there is a fresco depicting the baptism of Christ.

• The San Francesco Church where major art works are kept such as the Crucifixion by Van Dick.

• The concrete statue of the GiantIl Gigante, built beside the terrace of a local villa near the beach of Fegina, representing Neptune, the god of the sea.

• High up at 400 metres above sea level is the Soviore Sanctuary which dates back to the XVII Century.

Events:

• Sagra dei limoni - The Lemon Festival, on the 3rd Saturday in May. The village is decorated with lemons and you can taste limoncino, lemon cream, lemon marmalade and the special lemon cake; torta al limone.

• Corpus Domini, in June. The narrow streets of the historic center are ornately decorated with lovely designs all created by numerous colorful flower petals and in the evening there is a procession.

• Sagra dell'acciuga fritta, on the 3rd Saturday in June. You can taste the famous anchovies of Monterosso.

• Festa della Madonna Assunta, 14th of August. In the evening fireworks over the sea.

• Festival bandisticoon the 1st Saturday in September. A musical event in which bands from all over Italy participate.

• Sagra dell'acciuga salata e dell'olio d'olivaon the 3rd Saturday in September. You can taste the famous anchovies of Monterosso and buy some locally produced olive oil extra virgin.

• Festa del vinoon the 4th Saturday in September. You can taste the Cinque Terre DOC wines and the dessert version called Sciacchetrà.

vernazza cinque terre  vernazza cinque terre  vernazza cinque terre

The small fishing village Vernazza is probably the most characteristic of the Cinque Terre and is classified as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Vernazza was founded about 1000 A.D. and was ruled by the Republic of Genoa starting in 1276. The medieval castle, Belforte, was built in the mid-1500's, primarily to protect the village from pirates. An ideal way to arrive to this breathtaking village is by sea. The tiny port is surrounded by subtle colourful pastels and the charming piazza is lined with good restaurants and bars. The village is surrounded by very steeply-terraced olive groves which are said to produce among the finest olive oil in the country.

Things to visit:

• The Church of Santa Margherita di Antiochia, built on the rocks overlooking the sea

• The Tower of the Doria Castle, built in the 15th century to protect the village from pirates, is located above the bay and the small port of Vernazza.

Events:

• 20 July, Feast Santa Margherita di Antiochia

• The Feast of Pirates (no precise date).
