    Due Date: 15/05/2013

       Objective:

    • To make students’ learn different aspects of a finely crafted piece of writing
    • To assess students’ progress in relation to the previous assignment
    • To encourage them to understand different components of English language                                        

     

    Instructions:

     

    1. Late assignments will not be accepted.
    2. If the file does not properly run, it will be marked zero.
    3. Plagiarism will never be tolerated. Plagiarism occurs when a student uses work done by someone else as if it was his or her own.
    4. If any assignment is found copied, no marks will be awarded and the case may be referred to the academics for disciplinary action.
    5. No assignment will be accepted through e-mail.
    6. The font color should be preferably black and font size should be 12 Times New Roman.

     

    Q1. Convert the following narrative into a news story in such a way that the reader knows the outcome of the drama in the first sentence of the news story and then add background information about how it happened, and why it happened.            (5)

     

    Narrative

    When electricians wired the home of Mrs Mary Ume in Hohola, Port Moresby, some years ago they neglected to install sufficient insulation at a point in the laundry where a number of wires crossed.

    A short-circuit occurred early this morning. 

    Contact between the wires is thought to have created a spark, which ignited the walls of the house.

    The flames quickly spread through the entire house.

    Mrs Ume, her daughter Peni (aged ten) and her son Jonah (aged five months) were asleep in a rear bedroom. They had no way of escape and all perished.

     

    Q2. Read the list of words below. Each word has a different connotation, but has the same general denotation. Write its general denotation in column 2 and then write words from most positive connotation to most negative connotation in column 3.

Politely (Adverb)  modifies the verb asked

 

2. Thoughtfully, the old man chewed his dinner.

Thoughtfully (Adverb) modifies the verb chewed.

 

3. Make sure that you review daily.

Sure (Adverb) modifies the verb make.

 

4. The apples had been tightly packed in the box.

Tightly (Adverb) modifies the adjective packed

5. Tim was very happy about his success.

Very (Adverb) modifies the adjective happy.

Question 2:

I have spent some time on this and then finalized the answer of this question.

U may change the general denotative meaning but the order from positive to  negative connotative meaning is 100 % correct dont change it.

Thin, small or narrow in circumference or width in proportion to length or height

Adjective:


Adjective is a word used with a noun to add something (kind,quality,quantity etc). eg:large,honest,five,lazy,etc.,

Verb:


A verb is a word that tells or asserts something about a person or thing. eg:sing,kick,laugh,break, run etc.,

Adverb:


An adverb is a word which modifies the meaning of a verb,an adjective or another verb.
eg:This is a very sweet mango. In this sentence very modifies th verb sweet. very shows how much the mango is sweet. very is an adjective.

Connotation has to do with whether different synonyms for the same idea are good or bad. Two words can have the same meaning but different connotation.

Slender has a positive connotation
Scrawny has a negative connotation


Economical - positive
Miserly - negative

Steadfast - positive
Stubborn - negative

Studious - positive
Nerdy - negative
