Research Methods (STA-630)

Concept to be tested: Review of the Literature

In a class of research methodology, Ali presented an idea of ‘kidpreneurs – Entrepreneurship for children’ for his research. To explain the idea, Ali gave argument that according to his viewpoint there is lack of research on this topic. In his opinion, the potential dimensions for this research may be; nature of activities, entrepreneurial characteristics among children and linkage of education with entrepreneurship etc. In response of the idea, professor asked Ali some questions; “how many articles have you read or have you completed initial literature review? How is it possible to finalize topic and initiate a research without conducting a literature review?”

The professor’s questions created confusion in the class and Ali replied, “Literature review and identification of research gap will be done once the topic of the research is finalized”.

Activity

In your opinion, keeping goals of literature review in mind, build arguments in favor of statements given by either professor or Ali i.e.“research can be initiated with/without conducting literature review”.

Special Instructions

  • Give precise justification and reply should not exceed more than 150 words.
  • Build your own argument based on your learning of Research Methods and do not use any cheating link.

Well it's a bit confusing. Sometimes I feel that choosing the topic first is important because it will give direction to the survey .Conducting the review before choosing the topic would become cumbersome as the topic "kidpreneurs
– Entrepreneurship for children
" itself has many dimensions.

Novice researchers tend to approach the literature review as nothing more than a collection of
summaries of papers or an elaborated annotated bibliography of multiple research manuscripts
(Webster & Watson, 2002). A meaningful literature review is much more. Hart (1998) defined
the literature review as “the use of ideas in the literature to justify the particular approach to the
topic, the selection of methods, and demonstration that this research contributes something new”
(p. 1). He also noted that for the literature review, “quality means appropriate breadth and depth,
rigor and consistency, clarity and brevity, and effective analysis and synthesis” (Hart, 1998, p. 1).
J. Shaw (1995) noted that the process of the review should “explain how one piece of research
builds on another” (p. 326). Webster and Watson (2002) defined an effective literature review as
one that “creates a firm foundation for advancing knowledge. It facilitates theory development,
closes areas where a plethora of research exists, and uncovers areas where research is needed” (p.
13). From these definitions it is clear that an effective literature review should include the following
characteristics: a) methodologically analyze and synthesize quality literature, b) provide a
firm foundation to a research topic, c) provide a firm foundation to the selection of research
methodology, and d) demonstrate that the proposed research contributes something new to the
overall body of knowledge or advances the research field’s knowledge-base.

According to my view Ali is right, because as he said "there is lack of research on this topic".
so lack of research isi ly ha k ali k professor ki trha baki log bhi yehi kehty hnge k pehly complete literature review kro , and is topic p koi khas literature review available nhi hoge ,. isn't ? to agr ali start ly ga to hi ye topic agy brhy ga ...
wt u said guys ??? m sahi smjh rhi hun ya galt ?????????? :(

Galat samj ri ho,
Ali keh ra hai k sir literature review k bagair bhe topic final ho skta hai, likin professor kehra hai k beta pehle literature review kar k ao phr topic final kro.

Jahan tk mera khyal hai ali ko final krne se pehle literature review kr laina chahiye, q k:

Ali will know more about his topic of interest

Ali can draw his own conclusions, mtlb usko logoun k opinions pr depend nai krna pre ga

Ali can answer all questions concerned with his topic

Im not sure likin a literature review can also guide Ali in the right direction, like usko already idea hjai ga k kis kis area mein research ho chuki, it is possible k jo studies fail ho chuki hui hain wo unko modify kr k behtr results nkal saky?

yes nadia apne tehk kaha first wo focus literature review kery ga history back ground and periouse researcher arguments ko read kery ga then he will start profectly

and i think meshi apne b tehk kaha per andaz or tha :D BUS LUmsum k bager review of literature k topic na start ho sakta hy na final its my opinion.

A literature review is an evaluative report of information found in the literature related to your selected area of study. The review should describe, summarise, evaluate and clarify this literature. It should give a theoretical base for the research and help you (the author) determine the nature of your research. Works which are irrelevant should be discarded and those which are peripheral should be looked at critically.

A literature review is based on the assumption that knowledge accumulates and that we learn from and build on what others have done. Scientific research is a collective effort of many researchers who share their results with one another and who pursue knowledge as a community.
Today’s studies build on those of yesterday. Researchers read studies to compare, replicate, or criticize them for weaknesses.

The process of reading, analyzing, evaluating, and summarizing scholarly materials about a specific topic.

Agree

nadia sis ap ny bilkul thk kaha hai q ki kisi b chz ki reseach k liey literature review zriri hota hai q k agr ye na kiea jay aur koi interested topic pe research kr ly aur bad mai pta chaly k is topic pe reseach ho chuki hai to is sy bht loss ho skta hai.

Kya maione thk kaha????

nadiaa i agree with u

meri wali argument mein professor right hai.

agr apko argument daini k ali right hai tu ap ye de sakte ho:
because ali still hasnt finalized his topic of interest there is no point in conducting a literature review since wo kbi b topic change krne k mood mein ho skta hai.

phr ali kehra k literature review topic finalization k bad kare ga wo, this gives him a wide variety of topics to choose from.

par iske ilawa mje ali ki argument meein koi dum nai nazr ata :p
