Dear Students,

 

Note that the Graded Discussion Board (GDB) of CS403 Database Management Systems will remain open for Two days (48 Hours only) from 12:00 AM August 12th, 2015 (Wednesday) to August 13th, 2015 (Thursday) till 11:59 PM according to Pakistan Standard Time.

 

The topic of Graded Discussion Board:

 

Orchid Textile is a large scale organization consisting of hundreds of employees in different office branches across country. HR department decided some new benefits and bonus policies according to pay scale and Designation of employees. So they need to update employees’ relevant record based on specific criteria.  Which indexing technique will be better for above scenario for updation of records?

 

1)      Clustered Indexing

2)      Non- Clustered Indexing

 

Justify your answer with proper reasoning.

According to the given scenario. Non-Clustered indexing is best. In Clustered Indexing we can efficiently ordered the data on the basis of First name or the Last name but we can not modified the data efficiently.
But in Non-Clustered indexing we can ordered the data also we can modified the data efficiently . Because, in Non-Clustered indexing the order of data logically and physically not same.

So, It is best to use Non-Clustered indexing according to the given scenario.

wrong

non clustered are much slower search for thousands of hundreds of records in a database. you can user apply composite cluster to combine designation and salary fields in desired order for quick search and update.

in non clustered index data is stored in two separate places. like textbook indexes which refer the address of the real data. which are much slower then the real clustered index where data is phisically stored in database. remember every table create automatically an index for the primary key in SQL server databa.se

Kindly guide me if i am wrong that the only problem stated by most students, "Updation is the time taking process in Clustered Index and so is not good for heavy data"

For such type of problem, there is a solution available in clustered index that is creation of primary keys or foreign keys. where assigned such values which are less likely to be changed.

Now if u concentrate on our GDB, what it says? I think only updation is required "one Arear" filed which will decide bonus related to other benefits of the employees. 

Plz comments over it.

Clustered Index

  • Only one per table
  • Faster to read than non clustered as data is physically stored in index order

Non Clustered Index

  • Can be used many times per table
  • Quicker for insert and update operations than a clustered index

Both types of index will improve performance when select data with fields that use the index but will slow down update and insert operations.

Because of the slower insert and update clustered indexes should be set on a field that is normally incremental ie Id or Timestamp.

in this GDB, our primary key is not going to be change that certainly would be Employee Name or ID. So no new addition of row in the data. If Bonus and Incentives take place a new table and we allot them a primary and then connect these two tables, i mean Employee Table (already exist) and Bonus Table (updated material) then Clustered Index would be the best option to execute SQL searching and update criteria.
