Discussion Topic

A well reputed organization wants to implement a communication network among its head office and three branches in a city. The communication technology should be able to serve with good quality of service (QoS) and reliability. The organization has to choose either Wi-Fi or WiMAX. In your opinion, which of the given technique is more suitable for such scenario? Give two proper reasons to support your answer in either case.

WiMax
WiMax is a member of the "4G" family of technologies, the fourth generation of cellular and wireless data transmission systems. WiMax is designed to transmit data at high speeds over relatively long distances. Five miles is an average approximate range for a standard WiMax tower's signal, though some experimental deployments indicate possible coverage of nearly 30 miles over flat terrain.
As a telecommunications service WiMax networks are restricted to subscribers, and each tower is supported by a substantial infrastructure that controls access, speed, radio frequencies and data "backhaul" to the network core and the larger internet. Nationwide and multi-city WiMax networks can enable easy "roaming" in multiple locations.


Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is also a radio technology for digital data transmission, and is based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' (IEEE) "802.11" family of technology standards. Wi-Fi routers can be almost anywhere there's an electrical supply and a broadband internet connection. Routers work by plugging in to the internet modem and broadcasting a radio signal that nearby computers can connect to.
Wi-Fi signals typically have a range of a few hundred feet without obstacles, and the newest variants can provide theoretical maximum speeds up to 300 mbps.
Difference:
The difference between Wimax and Wi-Fi is; Wimax is a criterion based wireless technology which is used to provide internet access and multimedia services at very high speed to the end user while Wi-Fi technology uses local area network (LAN) for internet access. They are both wireless technologies but designed for completely different applications. Wimax covers a greater distance than Wi-Fi thus can cover a metropolitan area network.

User need specialized WiMax modems to access a WiMax network because 

WiMax networks can be expensive to deploy and maintain, requiring outdoor antennas or towers and base stations with supporting equipment. WiMax speeds typically center around 5 mbps, though subscribers can see higher "burst" speeds depending on the network. Cities can deploy WiMax antennas to cover most of a city or metropolitan area, similar to cellular data networks.
