SEMESTER FALL 2015 STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT (MGT603) ASSIGNMENT NO. 02 DUE DATE: 28JANUARY, 2016 TOPIC: STRATEGIC POSITION & ACTION EVALUATION (SPACE) MATRIX MARKS: 10 The Concept: The Strategic Position & Action Evaluation (SPACE) matrix is a strategic management tool used to analyze the strategic position of a company. It also focuses on strategy formulation especially as related to the competitive position of an organization. It is (SPACE matrix) another important stage 2 matching tool, is illustrated in Figure 1‐1. Its four quadrant framework indicates whether aggressive, conservative, defensive, or competitive strategies are most appropriate for a given organization. The axes of the SPACE Matrix represent two internal dimensions (financial stability [FS] and competitive advantage [CA]) and two external dimensions (environmental stability [ES] and industry strength [IS]). These four factors are perhaps the most important determinants of an organization’s overall strategic position. Depending on the type of organization, numerous variables could make up each of the dimensions represented on the axes of the SPACE Matrix. Factors that were included earlier in the firm’s EFE and IFE should be considered in developing a SPACE Matrix. Figure 1‐1 The following table 1‐1 shows the values that were used to create the SPACE matrix for company XYZ. In the given table of company XYZ, two internal dimensions (FS & CA) and two external dimensions (ES & IS) have been represented along with their factors and its values.
