Q. 1. Different topologies behave differently when a connection fails. You are required to discuss the effect on the network when only one device connection fails in the following cases:  [2 x 6 = 12 Marks]

 

  1. Seven devices are connected through a ring topology.
  2. Six devices are connected through a dual ring topology.
  3. Four devices are connected through a mesh topology.
  4. Twelve devices are connected through a star topology (Note: Do not consider the hub failure).
  5. Fifteen devices are connected through a star topology and only the hub is failed.
  6. Eight devices are connected through a bus topology.

 

Note: Your answer for Q.1 should be in the same order as given in the question statements.

 

Q. 2. Suppose a small company wants to develop a computer network of 18 computers in its main office. Due to limited resources the company wants a network architecture where a single communication medium can be shared among all other nodes. Considering this scenario, you are required to suggest the suitable line configuration and name all the possible ways through which your suggested line configuration can be implemented. [3 Marks]

Q. 1. Different topologies behave differently when a connection fails. You are required to discuss the effect on the network when only one device connection fails in the following cases:

  1. Seven devices are connected through a ring topology.

As the ring topology provides one way path for communication between devices in the ring, thus one node failure or breakage of cable isolate all the devices attached to ring from one another.

  1. Six devices are connected through a dual ring topology.

In this case if one of the devices fails then we have two paths so called dual ring. The nodes communication will not be disturbed and the nodes will follow the second path and the device that fails or goes down will be disconnected from the network.

  1. Four devices are connected through a mesh topology.

In mesh topology every node has a link with another nodes so if one device fails it will have no effect on the other (three) nodes except the one which fails.

  1. Twelve devices are connected through a star topology (Note: Do not consider the hub failure).

If one of the devices fails then it will have no effect on other nodes and just this node will be disconnected from the network.

  1. Fifteen devices are connected through a star topology and only the hub is failed.

When the hub fails the whole communication goes down and no device will now be able with other nodes.

  1. Eight devices are connected through a bus topology.

In this case if the BUS backbone stops working the whole communication will goes down. However if one device fails. It will have no effect on other devices connected to the network.

 

 

Q. 2. Suppose a small company wants to develop a computer network of 18 computers in its main office. Due to limited resources the company wants a network architecture where a single communication medium can be shared among all other nodes. Considering this scenario, you are required to suggest the suitable line configuration and name all the possible ways through which your suggested line configuration can be implemented.

 

Solution

In this case the spatially sharing system is best suitable and will provide the benefit of using the resources in a tactful manner and based on the needs. Bus topology can be used to provide a shared path over which the devices can communicate at lost cost. Only we need to have backbone cable, taps and drop tails that connect the nodes to the bus.

I suggest Multiple line configuration in this situation.
