The case:
The Procter & Gamble Company (P & G) is an American based multinational corporation
dealing in medicines and other consumer goods as well. For over 180 years, they have
challenged the norms and inspired the future by the products they put on the shelf for the
customers. Simultaneously, they experienced the numerous customers’ complaints in their
over-the-counter (OTC) division due to time taking production processes. To overcome this
challenge, management of Procter and Gamble decided to reduce its cycle time. In this
regard, management executed cycle time reduction technique in OTC division, which
conducts clinical studies that involve testing drugs, health care products, or treatments in
humans. Such testing follows the rigorous design, conduct, analysis, and summary of the data
collected. Total Quality principles provide basis to conduct this cycle time reduction
approach.
P & G management realized that final reports after cycle time reduction would take months to
prepare. Only by plotting the newly proposed process, they could fully understand the causes
of long production times, amount of rework, recycling during review and sign-off. By
restructuring the activities from sequential to parallel and identifying critical measures to
monitor the process, they were able to reduce the cycle time to less than four weeks.

After studying the principles of Total Quality management, We can observe that in the given case, P&G Company have used “Continuous Improvement & Learning” principle of quality management to overcome the problem of time taking production process.
To overcome this challenge management of P&G had decided to execute cycle time reduction technique in OTC division, which conducts clinical studies that involve testing drugs, health care products, or treatments in humans. Such testing follows the rigorous design, conduct, analysis, and summary of the data collected. Management has realized that final reports after cycle time reduction would take months to prepare. Through “Continuous Improvement & Learning” principle, Teams use a structured approach to evaluate and improve their processes, documenting them, and presenting a status report of improvements to senior leaders. & by plotting the newly proposed process by team they could fully understand the causes of long production times, amount of rework, recycling during review and sign-off. By restructuring the activities from sequential to parallel and identifying critical measures to monitor the process, they were able to reduce the cycle time to less than four weeks.
Advantages of cycle time reduction technique:
1. Competitive Advantages: If the Cycle time of P&G company is lesser than their competitors then they get a competitive advantage in the market. So, comparatively they will get higher preference from customers.
2. Higher efficiency: Lesser Cycle time signifies higher efficiency; lower cost and time spent is lesser and hence Profitability and ROI increases.
3. Customer satisfaction: Customer satisfaction will be high as the products are delivered before their expected delivery time.
4. Productivity increases: Productivity increases as the Cycle time decreases. Hence, it can be predicted that the process is streamlined resulting in higher employee morale.
5. Reducing the cost of operations: Cycle time reduction is achieved by reducing the time spent on non-value added activities and simplification and streamlining of the process; thereby reducing the cost of operations.
6. Better Positioning for Distribution Channels: The ability to produce on a tighter timetable improves distributor relationships and attractiveness, thus it helps to increase market share & reliability of P&G company globally.
