What is difference between missense and nonsense mutation and which one is beneficial for evolution?
This type of mutation is change in one DNA base pair that results in the substitution of one amino acid for another in the protein made by gene. In genetics, a missense mutation is appoint mutation in which a single nucleotide change results in a codon that codes for a different amino acid. It is a type of nonsynonymous substitution. Mutation leading to qualitative alteration in hemoglobin, the missense mutation in the globin gene that causes sickle cell anemia is the most common.
This type of mutation results in a shortened protein that may function improperly or not at all. In genetics, a point nonsense mutation is a point mutation in a sequence of DNA that results in a premature stop codon, or a point nonsense codon in the transcribed mRNA, and in a truncated, incomplete, and usually nonfunctional protein. Mutation is change in the nucleotide sequence of a gene or a chromosome.
Beneficial for evolution:
Nonsense mutation is beneficial for evolution then missense mutation because nonsense mutation (also known as “x” or “stop” mutations) cause the production of the CFTR protein to stop prematurely. This leads to a shortened, nonfunctional protein that the cell recognizes as defective and destroys. A nonsense mutation is also a change in one DNA base pair. Instead of signals the cell to stop building a protein.
