Discussion Question:


  1. ABC Investments operates two current accounts designated for salaries and operations respectively. The account meant for operations is overdrawn. ABC Investments has issued cheques to its employees being salaries for the month. A couple of cheques were returned refer to drawer. It has been discovered that the bank credited the salaries account with the equivalent of the overdrawn amount in the operations account. By keeping in view the given scenario you are required to discuss the following points:


  • Advise whether the bank had the right to set off between the two accounts.
  • Should the bank inform the company before exercising the right of set off?


  1. An officer from National accountability Bureau visits your branch, and asks about the last two year account statement of a senior Government officer to investigate his assets, he does not give you a written request and states that the enquiry is very secret, and he wants the documents confidentially. You are required to discuss the following points in this case.


  • Will you give him the information?  Why or why not? Give logical reasons for your answer?
  • As a banker what you will suggest to the officer?


You are encouraged to visit nearby bank branch, and furnish your answer after consulting with practicing bankers instead of giving copied/irrelevant/obnoxious details.
