Objectives:

Assignment

 

 

A system is a group of elements that are integrated with the common purpose of achieving certain objectives. Every system consists of basic components which formulates certain systems. Consider the example of an air conditioner that also belongs to some type of system.

 

An air conditioner has turned on in a room. Thermostat helps to detect the current room temperature. Thermostat is providing the basic input to the cooling system of the air conditioner. Internal cooling system of the air conditioner is controlling its operations in order to set the room temperature.  Now, thermostat keeps the room temperature at a fixed constant temperature after providing a certain feedback from indoor.

 

Keeping in view the above examples, you have to answer the following questions:

 

Question no 1. Identify above given example belongs to which type of system? You have to give appropriate reasons to support your answer. (Marks 5)                                                                                                                

Question no 2. Why your suggested system is better than other in terms of functionality?

If the temperature deviates from the desired temperature, the thermostat will sense the change and feed back the information to adjust the temperature so that the temperature is as close to the desired temperature as possible

Then we can define the main characteristics of Closed-loop Control as being:

  • To reduce errors by automatically adjusting the systems input.
  • To improve stability of an unstable system.
  • To increase or reduce the systems sensitivity.
  • To enhance robustness against external disturbances to the process.
  • To produce a reliable and repeatable performance.

Closed-loop Control system

The above example belong to Closed Loop system because

  • Is a system where part of the output is fed back to the system to initiate control to change Either the activities of the system or input of the system
  • It seeks to reduce the error between the desired and measured temperatures. Sometimes a thermostat combines both the sensing and control action elements of a controlled system, such as in an automotive thermostat.

Q2. Why I suggested Closed Loop system is better than other in terms of functionality is as follows.

  • Closed-loop control system looks at the current output and alters it to the desired condition; also known as a feedback system, the control action in these systems is based on the output
  • Measurement is feasible.
  • The process has a degree of predictability, i.e., a known approximate response to an input control or controls.
  • An output varies from a desired outcome and is not "Set and Forget."
  • A process can be kept on set point within a given accuracy.
  • Corrections to process disturbances are automated.
  • Unstable processes can be stabilized.
