Using these vectors evaluate the following.

V1norm =?                                  6 marks

Solution:

V1 = <1, 2,3>

||v1|| = sqrt[(1* 1) + (2 * 2) + (3* 3)] = sqrt (1 + 4 + 9) = 3.74 approx

A unit vector is a vector with a length of 1. Normalizing a vector converts a vector to a unit vector. To normalize a

vector, divide each component by its length. Let’s normalize the vector from the previous example.

u = < 1/3.74, 2/3.74, 3/3.74> = <.267, .534, .802>

V1 + V2 =?                                 2 mark

Solution:

v1 + v2 = <1 + 4, 2 + 5, 3 + 6> = <5, 7, 9>

V1.V2 =?                                    4 marks

Solution:

v1 . v2 = (1 * 4) + (2 * 5) + (3 * 6)

=(4+10+18)

=32

V1 X V2 =?                                  8 marks

Solution:

v1 = <1, 2, 3>  v2 = <4, 5, 6>

x3 = (2 * 6) – (3 * 5) = 18 – 15 = 3

y3 = (3 * 4) – (1 * 6) = 12 – 6 =6

z3 = (1 * 5) – (2* 4) = 5 – 8 = -3

v1 X v2 = <3, 6, -3>
