CS602 - Computer Graphics Graded Discussion Board (GDB) Open Date August 13, 2015 Close Date Monday, August 17, 2015

GDB Scenario: You might have observed that advance gaming applications require dedicated Graphics Card on the system and such games cannot be played on common computer systems. Examples of such typical games are Need for Speed, Rivals, Battle field, Crysis 2, Mafia etc. This dedicated hardware requirement of such games is a big obstacle for a normal user who cannot afford purchasing such graphics card. They cannot enjoy these games, even though they have very fast multi-core processors.

Keeping in view the above scenario, a new company ABC is investing to develop high quality Games with wonderful graphics results for common PC. They want to exploit the power of high speed multi-core processors. They claim that graphics result of their Games will be better than its competitors and it will not require dedicated graphics card.

GDB Question: Do you support the idea of ABC Company? Briefly identify the reasons that why existing gaming industry do not adopt this strategy. What is the key problem and limitation that force them to require dedicated graphics card for their games.

Why we use GPU?

Producing accurate graphical images is a mathematically intensive task; each frame in a three-dimensional image simulation takes millions of calculations. A computer's microprocessor is usually busy with other work, so the graphics card handles this. The card has a chip called a Graphics Processor Unit, a microprocessor specialized for video calculations. The GPU lets the computer's main processor do its job, allowing the computer to run at full speed.

What is Graphic Card
The graphics components are the part of your computer that control and enhance how graphics (pictures, videos, programs, animation, 3D) are displayed on your computer screen.

Why we need Graphic Card
When you play a game, thousands of lines of code are implemented. Even code for your player character just to move is hundreds of lines of code. More complex code = more processing power required. Then on top you have 3D models made up of polygons, some are more detailed than others. 10 years ago buildings used to be just a box (light on hardware today), but now they actually have detailed windows and insets. then theres the textures too and the lighting, both of these have gotten more photo-realistic than games of old. This is why it takes up more processing power. The more complex the game and the technology it uses, the more processing power they require to run.

An integrated graphics processing unit (GPU) doesn't use its own RAM; it utilizes the system's memory instead. So, if you have a computer with 4GB of RAM, the video card can use anywhere between one and five percent of the available memory for graphics processing. Of course, this percentage varies depending on the size of task, especially if you're multitasking or playing a game.

A dedicated, or discrete, GPU has its own independent source of video memory, leaving the RAM your system uses untouched. If you have a GeForce GTX 680M video card with 2GB of video memory, for example, that memory is completely separate from your computer's 8GB of system memory. Dedicated cards are perfect if you are into serious gaming or are a professional graphic designer.
