CS 605

Assignment No. 1

Question No.1

In my opinion spiral model is the most appropriate generic Software Process Model that might be used as a basis for managing the development of a Safety system for the nuclear power plants.

Strong approval and documentation control.

High amount of risk analysis hence, avoidance of Risk is enhanced.

Good for large and mission-critical projects.

Software is produced early in the software life cycle.

Project estimates in terms of schedule, cost etc. become more and more realistic as the project moves forward and loops in spiral get completed.

Additional Functionality can be added at a later date.

It is suitable for high risk projects, where business needs may be unstable.

Question No.2

Incremental development is the most effective approach for developing business software systems because in the incremental models, the product is partitioned into smaller pieces which are then built and delivered to the client in increments at regular intervals. Since each piece is much smaller than the whole, it can be built and sent to the client quickly. This results in quick feedback from the client and any requirement related errors or changes can be incorporated at a much lesser cost.

This model is less appropriate for real-time systems engineering since it usually involve many hardware components which are not easy to change incrementally. Also real-time system usually safety critical which need be built based on well planned process.

Question No. 3

The cost to fix a bug found during implementation is around 6 times costlier than identified during design.

This may require more time for the developers to make counter changes to the code base, eventually adding to the cost, time, and effort.

The changes made for a bug fix could also affect the application’s functionality.
