Older computer file systems were prone to scattering bits and pieces of single files at different locations on the disk - putting some of a file in one empty location, and the remainder of the file in other empty locations. When a drive was new and empty, files were all written in contiguous sectors. After lots of files had been created, modified, and deleted the available space on the drive was chopped up into many islands of empty space, and the file system did not do an intelligent placement of new files (find a spot big enough for the whole file if possible.) Files would be fragmented into many pieces.
But as drives got bigger, there was more chance that there would be large empty contiguous areas, and as processing power increased, smarter file system management made it possible to almost completely avoid significant fragmentation.
I have not seen a system for many years where defragmenting the drive was helpful.
And as another answer noted, the concept of fragmentation does not even apply to solid state drives.

Our main purpose here discussion not just Solution
Students having same subject can start discussion here to solve assignment, GDB & Quiz and can clear their concepts until solution is provided.
P.S: Please always try to add the discussion in proper format title like “CS101 Assignment / GDB No 01 Solution & Discussion Due Date: ___________”
Then copy Questions from assignment file and paste in Discussion.

Defragmentation is the process of locating the noncontiguous fragments of data and rearranging the fragments and restoring them into fewer fragments or into the whole file.
In terms of computer performance File fragmentation directly affects the access and write speed of that hard disk. All computers suffer from fragmentation. We use defragmentation to resolve this issue.Performance of system degraded during defragmentation but improve after it's completion as compared to previous
