CS609 System Programming GDB Fall 2020 Solution / Discussion

Majority of software we use daily are application software. Word processors, database, video players, web browsers and many more are all application software. According to a survey conducted by Edison Research (a US based company specializing in market research and surveys), 95% software companies around the world are producing application software of different kinds. These application software are major source of revenue for these companies.

Due to this, many critics of system programming argue that there is no need of system programming in today’s world because majority of software industry is dominated by application programming. There is no scope for System Programmers, and we should devote all our resources towards application programming.

CS609 GDB Fall 2020 solution idea:

During the defragmentation process, system looks halted due to the combining of files or pieces scattered throughout the disks. Defragmentation will not degrade the system performance. It overall improves the performance of the system. As the files will be stored in one place and the process also attempts to create larger regions of free space using compaction to impede the return of fragmentation.
