GDB Topic Announced Dated: Aug 12, 15

Dear Students,

Topic of GDB is as under:

FAT32 and NTFS are two files systems supported by Windows Platform. FAT32 does not have security features like owner information and privileges as NTFS file system has.

So, If we require to upgrade our FAT32 to introduce some security levels to some extent, what would be the structure level changes you suggest.

Consider one thing while answer the GDB is that your structure would not be similar to NTFS. But you can get idea of security structure used in NTFS file structure.

Important Notes:

1 - Write the name of header you want to introduce in FAT32 structure then short description of that header.

2 – Only three headers would be written in your answer. Writing more than three would cause in deduction of marks.

- GDB would be available for submission for 2 days that are 17/8/2015 and 18/8/2015 (Monday - Tuesday)

- Write your answer in bullets. Answers provided in paragraphs are marked as satisfactory.

- No GDB is accepted via e-mail.

- Copied comments / answers from any source are awarded as zero which results in deduction of absolute 5 marks from 100.

1.2. File System Conversion

In Windows 7, you can convert FAT32 partitions to NTFS. File system conversion is the process of converting one file system to another without the loss of data. If you format a drive as another file system, as opposed to converting it, all the data on that drive will he lost.

To convert a partition, you use the Convert command-line utility. The syntax for the Convert command is as follows:

Convert" [drive:]" /fs:ntfs

For example, if you wanted to convert your D: drive to NTFS, you would type the following from a command prompt:

Convert D:" /fs:ntfs

When the conversion process begins, it will attempt to lock the partition. If the partition cannot be locked—perhaps because it contains the Windows 7 operating system files or the system's page file—the conversion will not take place until the computer is restarted.

In Exercise 1, you will convert your D: drive from FAT32 to NTFS. For this exercise, it is assumed that you have a D: drive that is formatted with the FAT32 file system.

About FAT32

FAT 32 is one of partition format in windows system. It has 32bit file table, which strengthen FAT32’s management to partition, and break through the limitation of 2GB space in every partition. Since the production cost of hard drive decreasing, the volume capacity is increasing. After applying FAT32 partition format, a big volume hard drive can be definite as a partition but not be divided into multiple partitions. It is good for management to hard drive. Now, FAT32 is replaced by NTFS.

About NTFS

NTFS is standard file system after Windows NT, 2000, XP, server 2003, server 2008, Vista, and 7. It replaces FAT to offer file system for Microsoft. NTFS make advanced on FAT and HPFS, such as to support metadata.

As mentioned above, NTFS and FAT both are file system. However, NTFS is produced late than FAT32, but NTFS is more advanced in technology. In summary, the specific distinction are following below:

  • NTFS can support up to 64GB single file and 2048GB partition. FAT32 supports up to single file with 4GB and partition with 32G.
  • NTFS does not need Defragment your hard disk.
  • NTFS support to compress partition, folders and files.
  • NTFS takes a little cluster, which can help to manage space of hard drive effectively, and avoid wasting space of hard drive at the most extent.
  • In NTFS partition, you can share sources, folders and set access permissions on files. It is more secured than FAT32 partition.

Important Notes:
1 - Write the name of header you want to introduce in FAT32 structure then short description of that header.
2 – Only three headers would be written in your answer. Writing more than three would cause in deduction of marks

what about this??????
smjh ni aa rhi

three Header;s names required hain Ans k liye .....what are these headers ?

really tough Gdb don't know what to do .which headers improve security in FAT32 file system. searching a lot not even found a single query related to this topic.plz some one post solution or idea.

NTFS is the preferred file system for this version of Windows. It has many benefits over the earlier FAT32 file system, including:

  • The capability to recover from some disk-related errors automatically, which FAT32 cannot.

  • Improved support for larger hard disks.

  • Better security because you can use permissions and encryption to restrict access to specific files to approved users.

Sir asked about 3 headers that might improve security in FAT 32  file system
