Please carefully read the following instructions before attempting the assignment.

Assignment Guidelines:

It should be clear that your assignment would not get any credit if:

  • The assignment is submitted after due date.
  • The submitted assignment does not open or file is corrupt.
  • The assignment is copied. Note that strict action would be taken if the submitted assignment is copied from any other student. Both students will be punished severely.

 

1)      You should consult recommended books to clarify your concepts as handouts are not sufficient.

2)      You are supposed to submit your assignment in .doc or docx format. Any other formats like scan images, PDF, Zip, rar, bmp etc will not be accepted.

3)      You are advised to upload your assignment at least two days before due date.

Important Note:

Assignment comprises of 20 Marks. Note that no assignment will be accepted after due date via email in any case (whether it is the case of load shedding or emergency electric failure or internet malfunctioning etc.). Hence, refrain from uploading assignment in the last hour of the deadline, and try to upload Solutions at least 02 days before the deadline to avoid inconvenience later on.

The objective of this assignment is:

  • To understand Addressing scheme in the context of WAN

 

 

 

 

 

Assignment

 Suppose we proposed a new protocol called EP (Emerging Protocol), just like an IP.  The protocol has the following attributes.

  1. As contrast to IP address which has 4 classes it has only one class (the total number of hosts that this address can support is 65536)
  2. It will have source and destination address
  3. This protocol will support quality of service. It will support 16 types of classes. The field is called ToS.
  4. It will have an option for future. 8 bits will be reserved for future use. The name of the field is FU.
  5. It also has a version field of 4 bits.

Keeping in view the header of the IP address, you have to design the header for EP protocol that having the above given requirements.

Version (i.e. 4 bits)

ToS

Source Address

Destination address

 

You have to mention the size of each of the field in the above header. For example the size of version field in mentioned in the header.

 

Note: Calculate the size of Address (Source, Destination) and ToS in bits.

• FU=( 8bit) mentioned clearly that 8 bits reserved for future use.
• ToS=(4 bit)
Because minimum 4 bit required to represent 16 different numbers from 0 to 15. class 0 = 0000 and class 10=1010 and class 14= 1110 . In this way we need 4 bits to represent 16 different classes.
• Source Address=(16bit) As mentioned total number of hosts will be the 65536 so we need 16 bits to represent 65536 different source addresses.
• Destination address=(16 bit) The destination address will also be equal to source address so it will also consist of 16 bit to represent 65536 different users of network.

Here is the final solution do remember in prayers. As there is no reference materiel in handouts specific to EP but if you understand single octet of IP you can understand it in better way.
