ECO501 Development Economics Assignment No. 1 Solution and Discussion Spring 2017 Due Date: Jul 26, 2017

DUE DATE: JULY 26, 2017

The Case:

Migration from rural to urban centers is a common phenomenon observed in the population all across the world and especially the developing countries. About half of the world’s population lives in cities; by 2025, nearly two-thirds will live in urban areas. Urban population growth in the developing world is far more rapid than population growth generally; about half of the urban growth is accounted for by migrants from rural areas. Pakistan is also a developing country and the observed rural to urban migration rate in the country has been high which is evident from the massive expansion of urban centers of the country especially including Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi.

Being student of the development economics, discuss the economic factors why people are migrating from rural to urban areas of Pakistan in the light of Todaro’s migration model. Suggest the policy options taken by government to control and manage the rapid urbanization in the country.
