Q1. Empirical research is based on observed and measured phenomena and derives knowledge from actual experience rather than from theory or belief. To answer the readers’ typical questions about empirical research reports, writers use a superstructure that has the following elements:
Introduction
Objectives of research
Methods
Results
Discussion
Conclusions
Recommendation
Solution:

Keeping in view the superstructure elements of an empirical research report, choose the correct superstructure element from the given list and write it down against each question in the following table.

Reader’s Question
Superstructure Element
Why is your research important to us?

Readers concerned with solving specific practical problems want to know how what problems your research will help address.
Readers concerned with extending human knowledge want to know how you tink your reserch contributes to what humans know.
What were you trying to find out?

A key part of an empirical research project is the careful formulation of the research questions that the project will try to answer.
Readers want to know what those questions are so they can determine whether they are significant questions.
How do you interpret results?

Your readers will want to interpret those results in ways that are meaningful to them.
What is the significance of results?

What answers do those results imply for your research questions, and how do your results relate to the problems research was to help solve or the area of knowledge your research set out to expand.
What do you think we should do?

Readers concerned with practical problems want to know what you advise them to do.
Readers concerned with extending human knowledge want to know that you think your results imply for future research.

Q2. Your company has won a proposal to open up a cafeteria in Virtual University of Pakistan’s premises. Now, in order to gain success and cater the needs of the students, you need to know the current trends of food among students and faculty members. Keeping in view the above scenario, write down the methodology section of the empirical research report.
Solution:
Methodology:
The students are knowledgeable that consuming fast food, soda, and processed food are unhealthy and they contain additives. They indicated strong agreement to keep themselves hydrated and choosing food because of taste preference. Even though majority admitted eating fresh fruits, a significant number consume processed food such as chips, cookies, and cereal based on convenience. Smartphone resources, vending machine use, and drinking soda were their least frequently used habits.
It is inevitable that university students face a new environment for meal preparation, planning, and eating as they transition to their university life. Even though many university-aged students are aware of the importance of meeting nutritional values, their knowledge and attitude might hinder them from changing their behavior. Many other factors come in to play in their decision-making, however, the university’ knowledge on nutrition does not always lead to healthy food choices. Stockton and Baker discovered university students do understand that consuming fast food can lead to disease; however, their knowledge was not a factor that influenced their food choices.
Interestingly, Stockton and Baker found that university students did not think the harm from fast food was related to calories but rather harmful chemicals and additives. The main concern the students had was not the number of calories they were taking, but the additives to their food. Also, the male university students consumed more fast food than female university students. Students thought that hamburgers were not harmful to their health.
Various poor eating habits have been noted among college groups in many recent studies. University students tended to select food according to convenience, taste, time, and price rather than nutritional values. Many college students tended to choose quick and tasty options, which were usually available through vending machines.
Students have a fair knowledge of nutritional requirements for health; however, food choices they make are not necessarily healthy. Convenience and taste of food were priority.

  1. Dear Mr. Hassan,

You are right to expect high-quality merchandise from ‘The Automatic Door Company’. We try to give you the best for your money and to stand behind our products when they fail as a result of defects in material and workmanship, as our warranty states.

We appreciate your sending the door opener to us for analysis. It appears that the opener has got wet. Excess of moisture over a period of time causes this defect.

Our service manager estimates that cleaning and repairing your door opener would cost Rs. 2500. Since your door opener is several years old, you may want to consider buying a new one. We have made many improvements to our door openers since yours was manufactured, including a sealed circuit board that would prevent the possibility of damage from moisture. A new door opener, which costs Rs. 3500.00 postpaid, should give you an even longer service than your old one did.

Please let us know whether you want us to repair or replace your door opener.

Yours sincerely,
