Designing a training program
The management of Alpha Appliances realized that a formal training program is required to introduce a
newly designed performance appraisal system for their employees. The responsibility for organizing this
training program was assigned to HR manager because of having many successful training programs to his
As a part of need assessment process, an e-mail was sent to the employees for inquiring them what they
wanted to be included in their training program. Unfortunately, most of them ignored this e-mail and only
few responded. Based on the responses and previous experience of training programs, it was decided to
choose three instructional methods for this training program i.e. presentations by trainer, practical
activities and role plays.
Before starting training information regarding the new performance appraisal system was shared with the
employees. The relevant documents were given to the participants during training session so that queries
could be answered immediately and if there was any confusion it could be resolved.
The training session was held in a hall used for board meetings of the organization, but was scheduled on
weekend so that routine working continued without any disturbance. The participants were allowed a
compensatory leave against their weekend holiday.
Due to shortage of time the HR manager (trainer) could not collect formal evaluations from the
participants. However, he submitted his observations/evaluations to the management regarding this
training session in which he highlighted that it was a challenging session as to satisfy the queries of
participants regarding new system and how it would overcome the negative experiences faced by them due
to previously used performance appraisal system proved a difficult task. It was also difficult to engage the
participants for the whole day session.
Identify the strengths and weaknesses of this training program. (6 marks)
Discuss how the identified weaknesses can be overcome by the organization. (4 marks)
I MPORTANT :
24 hours extra / grace period after the due date is usually available to overcome uploading difficulties. This
extra time should only be used to meet the emergencies and above mentioned due dates should always be
treated as final to avoid any inconvenience.

prevailing in our country. Keeping in view the fact, you all are advised to post your activities as early as
