Conflict Management (HRM624) Semester: Fall 2017 Assignment No. 1 Due Date: November 16, 2017 Total Marks: 10 Learning Outcomes: After attempting this assignment students should be able to: • Understand the sources and causes of conflict. • Determine the causes of conflict in the mentioned case and recommend the useful approach to resolve the conflict. Background Conflict is inevitable among humans. When two or more social entities (i.e., individuals, groups, organizations, and nations) come in contact with one another in attaining their objectives, their relationships may become incompatible or inconsistent. Relationships among such entities may become inconsistent when two or more of them desire a similar resource that is in short supply; when they have partially exclusive behavioral preferences regarding their joint action; or when they have different attitudes, values, beliefs, and skills. Conflict is the perception of differences of interests among people. The Case Mr. Kashif has been running a cotton ginning factory from the last 20 years on the outskirts of Sahiwal city. This factory was inherited to him from his father who established it back in the 1980s. He has involved his two sons (Abid and Asim) into this business, who are well educated so that his family business could be successfully continued. After the involvement of his sons into factory strategic decisions, there has been a consistent setback in the business operations which has caused huge losses. Factory administrator Mr. Bilal, who has been working in this factory from the last 15 years and is also the veteran of this business has been called on by Mr. Kashif to figure out the reasons for this debacle in business operations and increasing losses. Mr. Bilal has reported the following Key issues to Mr. Kashif based upon his observation being the administrator of the factory. • Abid and Asim are both in command of the factory, both want to run it in their own will and wish but their interests are different. • Strategic decisions which need prompt action get delayed due to formal approval from both and in most of the cases both give contradictory remarks. • Factory administration has been split into two parts one favoring Abid’s decisions and other Asim’s decisions. • In both sides, managers despite working for business development and improvement in operations are trying to appease their favorite bosses. Requirements: Keeping in mind the above-mentioned case, you are required to answer the following questions. The maximum words limit for each question is 150. Questions: 1. Identify and describe the two main sources/causes of conflicts discussed in the case. (2 marks for identification, 4 Marks for explanation) 2. Recommend the useful approaches to resolve the causes of conflict identified in question 1. (4 Marks)
