GDB covered 1 to 7 lectures.

When two people, groups, or nation-states are dependent on each other for important needs, the cost of severe conflict is much higher than it is if they are not. (This is because conflict will cause the loss of whatever is provided by the other party.) For this reason, people, groups, or nations which are interdependent are much less able to risk a serious conflict which would completely sever cooperative relationships. In addition, interdependence tends to foster cooperative relationships, since it takes cooperation to get the parties' needs met. Development of interdependence is therefore a conflict-prevention strategy.

Developing interdependence is also a de-escalating strategy, which encourages cooperation and peacebuilding to replace competition and conflict escalation. The development of trade relationships between hostile nations.

for example, increases each nation's dependence on the other and reduces the likelihood of war. This was done between the U.S. and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, for example, as well as between the U.S. and China. In both cases the result has been a warming of relations--in the case of the Soviet Union, trade with the West was one of many factors that encouraged them to change their entire economic and political system.

Interdependence is the mutual reliance between two or more groups. In relationships, interdependence is the degree to which members of the group are mutually dependent on the others. This concept differs from a dependent relationship, where some members are dependent and some are not.

In an interdependent relationship, participants may be emotionally, economically, ecologically and/or morally reliant on and responsible to each other. An interdependent relationship can arise between two or more cooperative autonomous participants (e.g. a co-op). Some people advocate freedom or independence as the ultimate good; others do the same with devotion to one's familycommunity, or society. Interdependence can be a common ground between these aspirations.

Scenario B:

HRM624 Conflict management GDB Idea Solution

Scenario A: Answer -- Contrient interdependence:
Defined – meeting one party’s goals is seen to harm the other party’s goals.
Zero-sum situations are those seen by the parties as perfectly contrient – the more one party is benefited
the more the other is harmed. In other words, benefit “sums to zero.”
Scenario B:Answer --Promotive interdependence
Interdependence may also be positive (known as “promotive interdependence”).
Defined – meeting one party’s goals is seen to promote the other party’s goals
Virtually all conflicts combine promotive and contrient interdependence.
An interpersonal conflict in which both the promotive and contrient aspects of interdependence are
recognized is known as a “mixed-motive” situation.

When two people, groups, or nation-states are dependent on each other for important needs, the cost of severe conflict is much higher than it is if they are not.
