Restaurants and cafes from New York to London to Dubai have all conjured up over-the-top, expensive dishes that, while we might not be digging into any time soon, we sure like to ogle at...
Doughnut - £1,000
Created by the doughnut masters, Kripsy Kreme UK, the most expensive doughnut was unveiled as part of National Doughnut week. Revealed at Selfridges, the dessert costs £1,000 and was made with Chateau d’Yquem crème, raspberries, and Dom Pérignon vintage 2002 champagne jelly. But to really give it that gilded edge, it also includes 24-carat gold leaf, 23-carat gold dust and edible diamonds.
Ice cream sundae - £594.28 ($1000)
Bagatelle restaurant in New York City's Meatpacking District has just put this $1000 ice cream sundae on its menu. Named the Mauboussin Mega Sundae, it consists of scoops of vanilla ice cream and Dom Perignon Rose sorbet topped with chocolate truffles, macarons, whipped cream, chocolate vodka sauce, "gilded brownies" and a sprinkling of gold leaf. It also comes with a Mauboussin ring made of black steel and white gold worth £314.97 ($530), which means diners are paying £279.31 ($470) for the rest of the sweet dessert.
Grilled Cheese Sandwich - £59.43 ($100)
For the month of April, Chicago based restaurant Deca Restaurant + Bar located inside the Ritz-Carlton is serving up a 'Zillion Dollar Grilled Cheese' sandwich which has a price tag of $100 (so not quite a 'zillion dollars', then). It contains 40-year aged Wisconsin cheddar "infused with 24k gold flakes," white truffle aioli, 100-year-old balsamic vinegar and is served with a skillet of lobster mac.
Fish pie - £314.16
Charlie Bigham’s ‘Swish Pie’ costs approximately the same as 200 of Tesco’s cheese sandwiches. The dish is essentially a ‘normal’ fish pie, but its ingredients have been substituted with the most upmarket produce on offer. The fish is poached in Dom Perignon champagne, the bulk of the pie is made up of scallops, hand-caught oysters, Balik Salmon, fresh Turbot and white Alba truffle - all topped with Cornish lobster tails, gold crumb and two mother-of-pearl spoons holding Beluga caviar. Lobster Frittata - £594.28 ($1000)
Officially branded as the this lavish take on the humble omelette is available for order at Norma's Restaurant at Le Parker Meridien Hotel, New York City, and comes with toppings of lobster and 10 ounces of Sevurga caviar - the highest category of the delicacy from the Caspian Sea.
Frozen hot chocolate - £14,857 ($25,000)
Officially titled the '' at New York restaurant Serendipity 3, this dessert contains 14 rare and secret cocoas, 14 of the world rarest and most expensive cocoas from Africa and South America, milk, ice cubes whipped cream and shavings from the world's most expensive truffle, the La Madeline au Truffle. It's served in a baccarat Harcourt crystal goblet laced with 23 carat edible gold and comes with an 18 carat gold and white diamond bracelet attached to the goblet's neck.
Pizza - £100
The world's most expensive pizza, commercially available, is at restaurant in London. It's a thin-crust, wood fire-baked pizza topped with onion puree, white truffle paste, fontina cheese, baby mozzarella, pancetta, cep mushrooms, freshly picked wild mizuna lettuce and garnished with fresh shavings of a rare Italian white truffle, itself worth £1,400 (then $2,500) per 1 kg (2 lb 3 oz). Depending upon the amount of truffles available each season, the pizza is regularly sold at £100 each to customers.
Strawberry dessert - £2,347,418 ($3.95 million)
Arnaud's in New Orleans no longer offers the $1.4 million engagement dessert that came with a 4.71 carat diamond ring. The , which can still be bought for £4.90 ($8.25), is a dish of strawberries served in a marinade of port, red wine, spices and citrus with vanilla ice cream.
