Due date: January 18, 2016

Topic: Issues of Procrastination

Learning objective:

The core learning objective of this discussion is to enable student to effectively understand and deal with the issue of Procrastination.

Learning outcome:

After attempting this GDB, students will be able to understand and deal with Procrastination in much better way.

GDB Scenario:

Ms. Batool is enrolled in BBA (Hons) program and is currently in third semester. She is considered a brilliant, competent and confident student of her class. First three semesters were spent in excellent manner but in the start of her fourth semester, her teachers noticed a decline in her performance. Here class participation was reduced to zero, her quizzes and assignments were never on time and all this was happening due to her adverse medical condition. Keeping in mind her previous educational record her teachers provided her sequence of extensions in the deadlines of certain academic activities. Instead of utilizing these relaxations and avoiding them in future she made this habit, as a regular practice.

In order to maintain her good performance and to improve quality after recovering from health issues, she started to think about her assigned activities for much longer periods of time. With this state of mind, she unnecessarily indulged herself into needless revision in order to get perfection for her work, which cased further delay in her semester activities.  This practice worsened the situation and was felt as a habit of delaying her work due to invalid or weak reasons by her teachers.

Discussion Question:

You are required to analyze the above situation and discuss any three causes of Ms. Batool’s poor performance and a career self-sabotage.  Also enlist any of the two techniques to reduce these types of needless delays.

Reasons of procrastination

Delaying or postponing of assignments makes you less productive or unproductive. There may be a number of reasons of procrastination.

Key reasons for procrastination include:

(1) Unpleasant tasks

If you do not like the tasks or assignments which you are supposed to do, might be the reason of delaying them.

(2) Overwhelming

Sometimes you think that the task given to you is so huge that you cannot handle, you keep on hesitating to initiate it.

(3) Concerns about negative consequences of one’s work

Sometimes the fear of negative results of doing a task becomes the reason of postponing it.

(4) Fear of success (worry about assuming too much responsibility)

Just like the fear of failure, the fear of success also becomes a hindrance in performing a task. One thinks if he/she successfully completes some task he/she might be chosen for some bigger assignment.

(5) Lack of a perceived meaningful reward for doing the task

If you feel that you would not be rewarded meaningfully, you would hesitate to do that work.

(6) Enjoyment of the rush derived from scrambling to make a deadline

Some people enjoy doing things at the eleventh hour.

(7) Perfectionism

People also become victim of procrastination due to the habit of perfectionism.

Techniques for Reducing Procrastination
