Learning outcomes

After attempting this GDB, students will be able to:

  • Understand that how theoretical concepts can be implemented in real life.
  • Understand that life is and will not be smooth, challenging situations can come at any time in life and they have to encounter that.
  • Understand that how to deal with challenges strongly and recover from them.

The premise

Every human possesses inimitable set of personality which encompasses different thoughts, perceptions, emotions, feelings and experiences. This uniqueness makes us humans in distinctive way. We all have our individual natures that make us behave in a certain way. Ms. Hania is an individual possess a productive nature aided with a positive hard-working attitude; she is associated with a university as a student in a business administration program.

She was considered as a competent, hardworking and confident student of her class. First three semesters of her study program were smooth and her progress was excellent but as it is unforgiving reality that life never runs smooth, one moment can bring or disturb peace in one’s life. Same happened here with Hania, due to one emotional setback, her life became upside down and, in this period, there was a decline in her performance. Her class participation was reduced to zero, quality of her semester activities was disturbed and they were never on time. Keeping in mind her good previous educational record her teachers provided her sequence of extensions in the deadlines of certain academic activities. Although due to faith in Allah and the necessary support of her love ones, she recovered soon but instead of avoiding these relaxations in future she became habitual of that.

What actually happened was, she was well aware of collapse in her performance. And in order to regain the same level she started to over-think about her assigned activities and in result her average time to complete her assigned tasks increased. With this state of mind, she unnecessarily indulged herself into needless self-revision in order to get perfection in her work, which became a cause of further delay in her semester activities.  This practice deteriorated the situation and was felt as a habit of delaying her work due to invalid or weak reasons.

Point of Discussion

You are required to analyze the above scenario and discuss:

  1. The cause of Ms. Hania’s poor performance and career self-sabotage. Also discuss
  2. Two possible techniques to reduce these types of needless delays.

(a)

The main cause of Ms. Hania’s poor performance and career self-sabotage is to became habitual of that, teachers provided her sequence of extensions in the deadlines of certain academic activities.

(b)

1. Her first objective is to identify the self-sabotaging behavior that is preventing her from moving forward. To do this, she must become consciously aware of her daily choices, decisions, actions, and the resulting consequences.

2. Once her behavior have been identified, it’s necessary to pinpoint specific triggers that may be causing these behaviors to manifest in her life. These triggers could include people, objects, specific times, events, locations, etc.
