Diversity in the workplace means bringing together people of different ethnic backgrounds, religions and age groups into a cohesive and productive unit. Advances in communication technology, such as the Internet and cellular phones, have made the marketplace a more global concept. In order to survive, a company needs to be able to manage and utilize its diverse workplace effectively. Managing diversity in the workplace should be a part of the culture of the entire organization.
As per this case study of APAL Motors, where management facing multiple challenges.
Management should take corrective action to sort out workforce diversity issues.
Management should focus on training programs where emphasize on individual attitudes and appear to have only modest effects. Training that focuses on managing a diverse workforce will help supervisors connect with all team members and include every worker in the activities that support the company.
Training can help employees improve their performance. Training more focus on individual behavior, organizational systems, goal and their output effectively increase.
Rate the qualifications of the candidate based on the quality of his experience, not age or any other category, when hiring. When you hire a diverse but qualified workforce, you are on the right track towards being able to manage the diversity in your company.
Management should encourage diversity when creating teams and special work groups within the company. If manager creates a work group that does not utilize the skills of the most qualified employees, then insist that the group be changed to include all qualified staff members.

After attempting this GDB, students will be able to understand and manage workforce diversity in much better way.
Automotive industry in Germany is one of the largest employers in German economy. It is estimated that this industry employs more than 747,000 labor force. Apart from the large scale manufacturer like Audi, BMW, Ford, Volkswagen etc, there are many small scale automobile manufacturers operating in Germany.
One of these companies is APAL Motors. It is a German based company originally from Belgium. Like majority of the private sector, APAL is also dominated by foreignexpatriates. Major portion of its workforce is from other countries like Azerbaijan, Turkey, Latvia, Pakistan, Philippine, Moldova and some technical experts from the USA, and Belgium. Workforce of APAL is very much diversified in nature and the Management of APAL is facing certain challenges due to this workforce diversity.
Germany and Belgium based top management operate the company with strong hierarchical lines, and they tend to be very instructional in their approaches. They know that in order to ensure a healthy working relationship among the diverse workforce, healthy human relation is needed and healthy human relation can only be ensured when workforce diversity is handled carefully. If it could not be managed, it can be the worst nightmare for this corporation.
