The history of human warfare and conflict testifies the fact that differences are usually interpreted as frightening or threatening. Most people have a tendency to interact with individuals who are like themselves, they choose similar people to work with them and exclude others who seem to be different. However, fostering similarity seemingly makes it easier to interact with other people, especially in a work setting, but it also reduces creativity and complex problem solving. Research on organizational failure has repeatedly demonstrated that a lack of diversity in the composition of key decision-making bodies makes it difficult for them to recognize changes in their environment and to respond in appropriately new and novel ways. Hence, diagnosing the fundamental differences in others is an important part of being an effective manager. Being aware of and empathetic towards the different perspectives, needs and inclinations of other people is a key part of interpersonal maturity.

Discuss the role and importance of social intelligence in managing interpersonal relationships, in order to understand one’s self and the ways to interact with others.
