Learning Objective

The students are expected to develop an understanding  of  types of  conflicts in  the corporate environment with their possible sources and negative consequences.

Learning Outcomes

After going through this activity, the students will be able to identify signs of conflicts and its various types, and how these conflicts can pose danger to the smooth operations of an organization.

Assignment

The CEO of a textile company brought in Mr. Ahmed to manage its Faisalabad Textile Division. It is the highest paid, well equipped but least productive division in the company. This Division has also seen the departure of three seasoned directors after short tenures. While probing the employees, Mr. Ahmed came to know that the Head Office has instructed the staff to cut the business operational costs to its minimum, whereas quality service is the top priority of the Customer Relations Director. This led to the frequent turnover of division directors. He also identified frequent complaints about Dyeing and Stitching units. For example, the Stitching Unit cannot complete task until dyeing is finished. The Stitching Unit Manager believes that Dyeing Unit procrastinates until the last moments, forcing them to do a rushed job. He takes the stance that it is intentional because Dyeing Manager wants to make him look bad to the boss. The Dyeing Manager feels like Stitching Unit puts too much pressure on them by setting unrealistic deadlines. The damaging relationship of the two units’ managers is not hidden.  

The previous Division Director was also blamed to  put up the  shipping  schedule based on conversations with the Head Office only. All the managers criticized the leadership of ignoring their concerns about timeline for the shipping schedule and the standardized processes. Someone also pointed out the verbal attack managers had to suffer from the previous Division Director because of delay in shipment. Quoting his exact words a manager explained what he said, “your ineptness can cost us the loss of our valuable customers; why do you not work with commitment?”  “It seems that the top management is only concerned with getting work done quickly without our say in the decisions”, says

 another manager. Mr. Ahmed diagnosed that the employees were having lowest morale and leadership was insensitive to their problems.
