Privatization of Tijarat Bank Limited (TBL):

Tijarat Bank Limited (TBL), one of the commercial banks of Pakistan, was privatized in2002. Changes at multiple levels were required by the new owner, Emirates Group(UAE). The board of directors appointed a team of eight persons to initiate and managethe transition phase of the bank. The selected team decided to enhance the bank servicesto 24-hours online & telephone banking without increasing total costs. Therefore, theteam altered work schedules and introduced evening working shifts of the existingemployees. In order to save the labor costs, they did not hire any additional staff andcontinued the existing appraisal system and pay structures. The team believed thatemployees are habitual of criticizing change without any justified reasons; therefore thereis no need to involve them while initiating the changes – just draft the new policies andcommunicate to them downward in the organization. This action was perceived to resultinto more efficient transition. To supervise the employees of evening shifts, they selectedsome individuals who were supposed to be the best. Along with these changes the onlineand phone banking was also introduced by the TBL. But due to scarcity of the ITspecialists, the updation of website was not possible on regular basis. Team membersdirected the existing employees to be more responsive to the customers’ calls so that theissue of delay in website updation could be resolved through telephonic information. Theoperations of newly privatized bank were started and went smoothly for six months after wards
