Topic: Motivational Theories

Learning objectives: To enable you to understand the application of different motivational theories in practical business situations.

Case:

Crisp & Soft – one of the famous food restaurant chains in Karachi had established a reputation for cheap food items at lunch, hi-tea and dinner packages with consistent quality and fast customer service. The manager at Crisp & Soft had the perception that no matter in which city or town the public is in, public will appreciate if they could buy exactly the same variety of dishes at similar prices and same quality standard. To attain this, organization had built a very detailed training program for staff. Moreover, failure to pass the test at the end of the training program or failure to observe the methods and work practices would lead to demotion or dismissal. Each and every activity which is to be performed by the workers has laid down in rules and regulations of the company. A list of some of these is as follows:

                        • Workers will be trained before handling over the tasks of restaurants.

                        • If any employee came late by 5 minutes, then his/her salary will be deducted.

                        • No one is allowed to leave the office without approval of restaurant manager.

                        • If any employee is not meeting the requirement of greeting all the customers at restaurant with same welcome, he/she will face to an explanation by manager.

The management felt proud on the fact that they had thought everything and workers did not have to take any initiative on their own, all expected problems had been foreseen and procedures have been set to deal with all of them.

As far as the compensation package is concerned, workers and lower level staff were paid at reasonable rate, with free uniform and meals. HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) System is installed by the management. Secondly, managerial level staff is receiving market based salary and also having membership of social club of the restaurant.

MGT211 2nd Assignment solution DUE DATE: 29th JANUARY 2013

solution :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

A behavioral construct where control is achieved by manipulating the consequences of behavior. A business manager using reinforcement theory might employ rewards for desirable behavior by staff and punishments for undesirable behavior to help steer employees toward intended performance goals. Also called operant conditioning.
Reinforcement/Behavior Modification Theory: Theory that behavior can be
encouraged or discouraged by means of rewards or punishments.
Most managers prefer giving rewards and placing positive value on performance to
doling out punishment.
· To strengthen desired behavior at work place.
· To force the workers to adopt that behavior.
· There are two ways for reinforcement:
· Positive reinforcement
· Negative reinforcement
· Positive reinforcement means to encourage a particular behavior.
· Negative reinforcement means to discourage a particular behavior.

The Hierarchy of Needs is as follows:
1. Physiological Needs (basic issues of survival such as salary and stable employment)
2. Security Needs (stable physical and emotional environment issues such as benefits, pension, safe work environment, and fair work practices)
3. “Belongingness” Needs (social acceptance issues such as friendship or cooperation on the job)
4. Esteem Needs (positive self-image and respect and recognition issues such as job titles, nice work spaces, and prestigious job assignments.)
5. Self-Actualization Needs (achievement issues such as workplace autonomy, challenging work, and subject matter expert status on the job)

For the 3rd Q. plz read these Two-Factor Theory OR Hygine Theory, I hope you will be able to give the ans. of 3rd question by urslef.
Frederick Herzberg’s theory of motivation holding that job satisfaction depends on two
types of factors, hygiene and motivation.
· Factors required to keep employees in the organization are called hygiene factors.
· Factors used to get high productivity from workers are called motivators.
Hygiene factors fall with the biological needs, safety needs and partially with social needs of
Maslow’s hierarchy theory. Motivators are almost similar to social needs, Self esteem needs
and self actualization needs of Maslow’s hierarchy theory. Both factors should be present in
the organization at the same time to get productivity from workers.
This theory suggests that managers should follow a two-step approach to enhancing
motivation—first, ensure that hygiene factors (working conditions, policies) are acceptable,
and then offer motivation factors such as recognition and added responsibility. Biological
needs are related to human body’s survival. E.g. food, drink, air, sleeps etc.

Can Anybody discuss about the reinforcement of Positive Theory, As i cant see any positive reinforcement, no rewards, No Motivation, No praise

Please discuss the questions, not the definition, which is available on internet.

google p search kro ap ko mil jaye ga phr b thora sa i post here

Positive reinforcement can be achieved in many different ways. Providing flexible scheduling, writing a thank-you note to an employee who maintained a company value in an adverse and challenging situation, taking your team out for lunch to let them know your appreciate their efforts, providing a training opportunity for an employee that achieved an excellent rating on their performance review or providing a merit increase for employees that achieved the measurable goals and objectives for the year are all examples of positive reinforcement.

i hop its enough

First forget whatever mentioned in the handouts and on internet. Utilize your own experience which you people are daily observing or watching but not giving preference....
There are two ways in your life if you think about it, one is positive and second is negative. But some cases you are not well aware and you stay in between. The positive reinforcement is a direction where someone is doing same jobs as he got training and orientation from the organization or whatever boss wants. For examples, you have to complete your work with well organized manner whatever time may be consumed in the job. After the completion, manager respect you, praise on verbal basis and formal basis which internally motivate you to do same or higher next time. Think a while about a child where you are giving him/her a gift after in term of chocolate after home work done or completion of any task which need. If same child is doing anything wrong then you are changing your moods and sometime you also punish him. Think a while and carry on from here................I believe 3 idiot movie would help all to clear the concept of each topic. No benefits if you are in top ranking in the university board without understanding.

Only the second question is taking time rest id very easy.
