In August, Starbucks directs baristas in the southeastern United States to e-mail a coupon for a free iced coffee to friends and family members. However, e-mail knows no geographic boundaries and, worse, can be printed repeatedly.

After the e-mail spreads to every corner of the country and is reproduced, Starbucks pulled back the offer. Resultantly, a dissatisfied customer named Kelly Coakley filed a $114 million class- action lawsuit against the company.

QUESTION:

Place yourself in decision maker at Starbucks; how would you make a better decision to avoid the situation stated above.

first we have to evaluate the gaps and the decision style that the starbucks adopted; and develop a rational decision.

Instructor's Reply:

Your participation is appreciated well. Let’s discuss your queries. There are two types of decision making steps.

  • Rational Model
  • Non Rational Model

Rational model is further divided into steps which are:

Identifying a problem

In this step, the decision maker is determining what’s relevant in making the decision.

Identifying the decision criteria

This step brings the decision maker’s interests, values, and personal preferences in the process.

Allocating weights to the criteria

The decision-maker weights the previously identified criteria in order to give them correct priority in the decision.

Involves developing alternatives

Identifying decisive factor is important because what one person thinks is relevant, another may not.

Analyzing alternatives

Each alternate must be analysis critically.

Involves selecting an alternative

The decision maker selects the best alternates from the selected alternates

Choosing a course of action and implementing the alternative

Choosing alternate must be implemented by higher authority.

Involves evaluating the decision effectiveness.

In the last step the decision maker see that the problem is solved accordingly or not.

Non Rational Model is also divided in some steps which are:

  • Satisficing Models
  • Incremental Model
  • Garbage-Can Model

All the concepts about the rational and non-rational steps are discussed in lesson 16 and lesson 18, so you are requested to watch video lectures regularly.
