SME sector is the backbone of Pakistan’s economy in terms of its contribution towards GDP, employment generation and export development. Financial access is a key driver in developing the SME sector which in turn leads to economic growth of the country. According to a latest survey there are Approximately 3.2 million business enterprises in Pakistan. Enterprises employing nearly 78% of the non-agriculture labor force and their
contribution to GDP are over 30%.

Government has established SMEDA and other microfinance institutions and ministry of production has overlooked the prevailing policies to promote the trend of SME’s in Pakistan. Women’s are also encouraged to be entrepreneur as they constituent 52% of the total population and it is becoming necessary to utilize them in the national progress. TDAP has taken initiative by facilitating and promoting women entrepreneurs through training and workshops and by laying emphasis on improvement of quality adherence to time line and emphasizes best business practices.

Women seem to be ruling the world at the moment. People are in view that
“women are agents of change” cannot be overturned and the contribution
towards the economy is strengthening with every passing day. Hence the
present era provide the opportunity to be a successful entrepreneur as vast
prospects are there.

Being a women entrepreneur and working in our society has had to
encounter many challenges in addition to general one. In your view,
What are those specific hurdles/challenges faced by women entrepreneur?

The potential for women entrepreneurs to be ‘agents of change’ in their communities has been documented across the globe. The World Bank’s 2012 World Development Report, which focused on Gender Equality and Development, makes clear the potential “double dividend” from investing in women: women are more likely than men to invest their incomes in their families and communities, driving GDP up and illiteracy and mortality rates down.

However, women face many of the barriers that men do to starting their own business, and many more. Encouragingly though, for the first time in 13 years, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor study of 59 economies shows that women are creating businesses at a greater rate than men in three economies: Thailand, Ghana and Nigeria. In four others, the start-up rates by gender are equal. The other 52 economies still lag (sometimes significantly behind) but we can hope this is an early indication of a broader shift – and try to understand what characterizes these positive anomalies.

So why might businesses want to get involved? At the most basic level, understanding that businesses can only thrive when communities do, the words of the IMF’s Christine Lagarde provide some guidance: “the evidence is clear, as is the message: when women do better, economies do better”.

Forward-looking businesses are already exploring the ways they can better enable women entrepreneurs, with many moving from traditional philanthropic support to direct integration with their business. So what can businesses offer? Three potential avenues are:
