Topic: Industrial Hazards and Role of Government Case: Hundreds of tanneries are working around the vicinity of Kasur, a very historical, culturally opulent and heavily populated city near Lahore. This industrial setup started 28 years ago, and it was very good for the people living in that area because now they had more job opportunities. At that time people usually went to Lahore for seeking job, but after the expansion of tannery business, conditions were becoming changing. Kasur has one advantage that it is situated near Indian border, so it has more access for animal skins which are being traded between india and Pakistan. In india, meat industry is not good due to the religious bonding of Hinduism, which prohibited the killing of animals and eating their meat. So indian traders prefer to export livestock to the neighboring country like Pakistan and Bangladesh, as they are mostly populated with Muslims, and big consumers of meat. It was good news for people living in Kasur that they had something very related to do at their home. After passing 15 years, tannery industry flourished so much, and people were getting benefits after the establishment of Tannery labor Union and Tannery Trade Union. In 1999, first case of skin cancer had registered. After primary investigation, it had revealed that it happened due to the toxic chemical in the underground water of Kasur, which was used without any treatment or filtration. These chemicals were declared as the by-product or waste of those tanneries. After this mishap, different social activist and NGOs started campaign to put pressure on government to take preventive action. Till now, almost 1796 cases have registered of cancer, which is alarming for everyone.
Question: In your opinion, how government should intervene in this issue, to protect people from cancer, while keeping in view that employment of thousands of people is associated with this industry?
