What Is the Utilitarian Approach?
The Utalitarian Approach is an ethical theory holding that the proper course of action is the one that maximizes the overall happiness. It is thus a form of consequentialism, meaning that the moral worth of an action is determined only by its resulting outcome, and that one can only weigh the morality of an action after knowing all its consequences.

Yes, the utilitarian approach should be used in this situation for making a final decision on blast fishing due to its ethical perspective

Blast fishing or dynamite fishing is a fish catching technique used to artificially kill the bulk quantity of underwater fish for commercial purpose. In this technique, small scale underwater dynamite blasts are used to kill fish for easy collection of bulk quantity fish. This is a large scale technique used in different parts of the world. Although it is an illegal technique in most of the countries but still it is in use due to weak regulatory system in some countries. Many fish farms and fishermen use this technique for making easy money with less cost and time. On the other side of it, negative impact of blast fishing on eco system and human health is yet unexplored to a large extent.

Mr. Nadeem who is the manager of a fish farm near the bank of river Jhelum is in a cognitive dilemma whether to use eco friendly fish catching techniques or to use blast fishing technique for making quick profit. Financial returns of the firm may significantly increase if Mr. Nadeem starts using this technique of blast fishing. He has often observed fishermen and fish farms in the surrounding areas using this technique. There is no significant regulatory check on sea life protection in Pakistan although laws are there along with some foreign funded NGO’s working for wild life protection.

Now from financial perspective, Mr. Nadeem wants to use blast fishing technique. But his understanding about the usefulness of an ethical business approach is causing doubt in his mind. He has started thinking about the after effects of blast fishing for surrounding population in particular and for society in general. After some brainstorming, he has decided to use utilitarian approach for making a final decision in this regard.

Do you think that the utilitarian approach should be used in this situation for making a final decision on blast fishing? What kind of drawbacks a fish farming business may have with the use of such blast fishing technique?

baar baar question post krne ka koi maksdd ???

I mean to say, please don't increase the length of the topic under discussion by double posting the GDB questions with context , etc

The Utilitarian Approach assesses an action in terms of its consequences or outcomes; i.e., the net benefits and costs to all stakeholders on an individual level. It strives to achieve the greatest good for the greatest number while creating the least amount of harm or preventing the greatest amount of suffering. It holds that every entity's interests should be considered equally when making the decision, and this includes those of other species since they also are capable of suffering.

So for any set of options it would view the most ethical option as the one which produces the best balance of benefits over harm for the most stakeholders. Outcomes may be quantified in such terms as contentment and suffering, the relative value of individual preferences, monetary gain or loss, or the short-term and long-term effects of an action.

In a business context, this approach might rely on a statistical analysis of probable outcomes, a classic costs/benefits assessment, and/or a consideration of the marginal utility of a consequence for various stakeholders in the group.

Yes according to me Mr. Nadeem should apply utilitarian approach for this purpose.

So here we can say that blast fishing is the only method which can be used to maximize the profit of the fishing firm. As here it they get maximum profit by minimizing the cost.

But here this is immoral practice from the ethics point of view but here he want to get the desired targets by applying utilitarian approach is final decision on blast fishing .

Here we have many effects on the water

  • Destroys everything in the water, all fishes, and coral reefs.
  • Build hatcheries, for jobs and replace harvested fishes. Make using dynamite for fishing a long term.
  • Water pollution it ruins the balance under the water small fish are killed even though they are hardly big enough to eat.
  • The corals and the spawning habitat of the fish are destroyed so small fish and future fish will be gone.
  • Destruction of animal under water
  • Destruction of under water plants and minerals
  • Blast can change the three sensational structure of reef.
  • It destroyed the food and shelter of the reef inhabitants.
  • Under the blast fishing process reef is unable to maintain its role as a protector of coastli
