Wayforward-sports and leather from Sialkot, is the leading leather manufacturers in Pakistan. It is an established export house for the quality manufacturing & exports of world class Sports goods & Leather Products. Wayforward-sports and leather is not only providing the employment opportunities but also is successful in earning a valuable foreign exchange in terms of exports. But if we see on the darker side of the picture, like many other tanneries, it is also inflicting harm to the environment in shape of industrial waste polluting the environment and inflicting severe harm to the people residing in the premises.

Point of discussion:

Environmental ethics is the part of environmental philosophy which considers extending the traditional boundaries of ethics from solely including humans to including the non-human world. It exerts influence on a large range of disciplines including environmental law, environmental sociology, ecotheology, ecological economics, ecology and environmental geography.

There are many ethical decisions that human beings make with respect to the environment. For example:

Should we continue to clear cut forests for the sake of human consumption?
Why should we continue to propagate our species, and life itself?
Should we continue to make gasoline powered vehicles?
What environmental obligations do we need to keep for future generations?
Is it right for humans to knowingly cause the extinction of a species for the convenience of humanity?
How should we best use and conserve the space environment to secure and expand life?

The analysis of the ethical aspects of environmental management shows the links that can be created between the development of an ethical culture of organizations and the achievement of the environmental excellence. The research provides an overview of the concept of environmental ethics and encloses it within the scope of environmental management. Someone needs to explain why an increasing number of organizations, both large and small, are setting up environmental management systems, making environmental investments and reducing risks over and beyond legal requirements, even when the benefits are not at all obvious, even in the long run. Also, this paper provides some practical examples of organizations environmental problems and points out how these organizations adapted their environmental strategies. The main conclusion of this conceptual paper is that organizations' competitiveness in any industry and environmental protection are two interconnected concepts and we believe that there can be no excellence in business without excellence in environmental protection or vice versa.

According to my point of view  Wayforward-sports and Leather Company can become socially responsible by expanding his business. As this is good manufacturing company in all senses but to avoid dark sides of it the manufacturers must adopt ethical behavior in business.

They must take steps to control pollution

Wastage of chemicals must be burnt out.

Try to avoid conflicts

Promote Business activities

How Leather Production Harms the Environment Until the late 1800s, animal skin was air- or salt-dried and tanned with vegetable tannins or oil, but today animal skin is turned into finished leather with a variety of much more dangerous substances, including mineral salts, formaldehyde, coal-tar derivatives, and various oils, dyes, and finishes—some of them cyanide-based. Most leather is chrome-tanned. All wastes containing chromium are considered hazardous by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The waste from tanneries also includes large quantities of other pollutants, including protein, hair, salt, lime sludge, sulfides, and acids. Furthermore, a chrome-tanning facility wastes nearly 15,000 gallons of water and produces up to 2,200 pounds of “solid waste” (e.g., hair, flesh, and trimmings) for every ton of hides that it processes.(13) Leather tanning also generates 800,000 tons of chrome shavings annually, and much of this chromium waste ends up in landfills.(14) Groundwater near tanneries has been found to have highly elevated levels of a variety of toxic substances. The Regis Tanning Co., Inc., operated a tanning facility in New Hampshire from the early 1950s until 1972. But more than 20 years after it closed down, groundwater samples collected in the area revealed that arsenic, chromium, lead, and zinc were all still present—likely because of wastes disposed of on the property—while samples taken from nearby Lamprey River and its wetlands indicated the presence of cyanide, chromium, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).(15) More than 500 tanneries in three districts of India were charged with polluting some 16,000 hectares of agricultural land and contributing to drought conditions that were “not due to failure of monsoon or other natural causes termed as Act of God, but … purely man-made.”(16)
