KHILAFAT MOVEMENT:

The Khilafat movement (1919–1924) was a pan- Islamic political protest movement launched by Muslims in sub continent to influence the British government and to protect the khilafat-e-usmania of turkey during the 1st world war

The Khilafat Movement was organized by the Ali brothers- Mohammed Ali and Shaukat Ali in protest against the injustices done to Turkey (which had fought against Britain) after the First World War.

Turkey was important to the Indian Muslims as the Sultan of Turkey was also the ‘Caliph’ (or Khalifa) and was the head of the Muslims throughout the world. The Khilafat leaders put pressure upon the British government to give better treatment to Turkey. Through this demand, Muslims were drawn into the national movement in large numbers. The movement becomes a part of the national movement. The Congress leaders joined in the agitation and helped in organizing it all over the country. The Gandhi allied with Muslim leader and at the time of results he leaves the movement and because of narrow mindedness of him this movement come to end. Gandhi get famous He obtain the title of Mahatma

Causes of its failure:

  1. Unstable unity
  2. Contradiction in objectives
  3. Danger of unity of Islamic world
  4. Jump of Gandhi
  5. Effects of Hijrat movment
  6. End of khilafat in Turkey
