devices using batteries e.g. automotive applications, aircraft applications and other low voltage, low current devices. AC is used in all kind of high voltage usage appliances for example home appliances ,motors, industrial machinery .
AC to DC:
rectifier is use to convert AC into DC. In which 4diods and 1 capacitor is used .it allow current to flow in one direction only. the diodes block the current when it flows in opposite direction. The capacitor stores the energy when the blockage happens.
DC to AC:
Inverter is used to convert DC to AC. In which 4 switches are used(in basic inverter).the inverter made unidirectional current coming out of battery into bidirectional AC .by turning 1st and 3rd switch on it makes current flow in one direction and after few seconds the switches change and the 2nd and 4th switch turned on, making the current to flow in other direction

For this reason, AC to DC converters is either a part of devices themselves or as part of their power cords. If you've built a device you wish to power from an AC outlet, you must add an AC to DC converter i.e. RECTIFIER
even your laptop's adapter contain rectifier that converts AC into DC
