A diode allows electricity to flow in one direction only and blocks the flow in the opposite direction. They may be regarded as one-way valves and they are used in various circuits, usually as a form of protection. There are different types of diode but their basic functions are the same. These are noted below along with examples of diodes in use. The most common type of diode is a ‘silicon diode.’ It is enclosed in a glass cylinder with the dark band marking the cathode terminal. This line points towards the positive of a circuit. The opposite terminal is called the anode. Generally, diodes do not conduct until the voltage reaches approximately .6 volts; this is called the ‘threshold point’. If the current becomes too high the diode may crack or melt.

Attention Students: You don’t need to go any other site for this assignment/GDB/Online Quiz solution, Because All discussed data of our members in this discussion are going from here to other sites (Other sites Admins posted with fake IDs at their sites :p ). You can judge this at other sites yourself. So don’t waste your precious time with different links.

A diode is an electrical component that has an anode and a cathode. The resistance is lower (current flows easier) from anode to cathode and higher in the reverse direction making them useful for changing alternating current to direct current at higher power levels and in logic circuits at lower levels. "LED" means, light emitting diode. That doesn't mean LEDs are "better," it means they function in circuits where providing a visual representation of their state is needed.
As devices are made to perform more "intelligent" operations, diode circuits can be built inside the chip rather than mounted on a circuit board. Diodes aren't "being replaced," rather the construction of electronic devices is becoming more complicated causing them to be used in different ways.
Diodes are being replaced by ordinary diodes because, LED make excellent voltage references from a transistor current source circuit. They are also very good for setting up thresholds for R-C timer circuits. It also provides a visual indication that the circuit is turned on, or the threshold has been reached. There for LED’s are batter then ordinary diodes.
