Introduction to Psychology (PSY101)
Assignment No. 02
Due Date: July 15th, 2015 Marks: 15
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this assignment, students will be able to:
· Identify types of long term memory in everyday life
· Differentiate among different systems/types of long term memory
Dear Students,
Given below is a short story in which different systems/types of long term memory have been
discussed within the life context of the same individual. Your task is to identify which
system/type of long term memory is operational in which part of the story. After identification,
you are also required to justify your identification as well. Furthermore;
1. Give your answers in the table given below only. If assignment will not be attempted
in the given tabular format, marks will be deduced.
2. Do not copy the words of handouts or internet while writing your justification;
otherwise no marks will be awarded.
“Since his childhood, Ali has always been intrigued by roller skates. He has always wanted to
learn how to use roller skates. When he was 10 years old, he purchased a set of roller skates and
started learning how to ride on them. After 1 year, Ali was able to ride on roller skates without
any difficulty. He was very happy with this achievement. Daily, he used to go with his friends
Asim and Mohid along the same route from his home to the nearby garden and back home. That
route was deeply enrooted in Ali’s mind.
One day, while he was riding the skates, he faced a major accident and was severely injured.
Following that accident, he was frightened to ride on roller skates for about 2 years. He always
remembered each and every detail of that accident and was always terrified to recall that
incident. Finally, he thought to get rid of his fear and rode the roller skates after 2 years. He was
pleasantly surprised to see that even after 2 years, he still remembered how to ride roller skates.
That day was the day of his victory over his fears.”
Marking scheme:
· 1 mark for identification of system/type of long term memory
· 1 mark for identification of the correct event where that memory has been involved
· 3 marks for justification i.e. how is the chosen type of long term memory justified for the
chosen event

Type/system of long

Event from the story where the

after 2 years he still remembered how to ride roller skates

Procedural memory

Riding roller skates

Flash bulb memory

Recalling the accident, remembering each and every detail

guide me if its not right

minha khan i think ya ho ga what u say ........

1st ha procedural memory

2nd ha Episodic and

3rd ha Implicate

ap na kasa ya sab kahan kindly explain then i will explain ...

But I have reservations with the 3rd part...I think it should be procedural memory because after 2 years he remembered to ride the skate; its a skill which he remembers and he was not required to make the effort to recall...

What do you think??

Kindly discuss...

but am thinking about the 3rd part is Flash bulb memory because He was pleasantly surprised to see that even after 2 years, he still remembered how to ride roller skates.

Flashbulb Memories
The memories that are as clear and vivid as a snapshot.
Such memories are of events that are important for us, are specific, or surprising or astonishing e.g.,
an interview room, an accident, first day at class.
Although flashbulb memories are vivid, clear and detailed, still they may be lacking many important
At times the recall may be very different from the actual event whereas the person believes he is
remembering right.
Many elements may be missed and many added.

What u say Samra sisoo

The broad categories of long term memory are: declarative; episodic and semantic and non declarative; procedural...

Your point is valid but as per requirement we are supposed to identify the type of long term memory being applied, and being part of the broad category, I'm saying procedural...

As per my understanding, the 3 events are:

  1. learning to ride skate (procedural)
  2. incident that took place (episodic)
  3. remembered to ride skate after 2 years (procedural)

I don't think that implicit or flash bulb memories are valid to be applied over here...its just an opinion, I might be wrong...

Share your idea as well in this regard...

yes u are right
