Question :1
You have read about Eric Erikson theory in lecture 11 of your course in detail. Following are few scenarios related to the stages of development presented by Erikson. You are supposed to read them in detail and identify the correct stage of development discussed in each scenario. After that justify your selection giving at least four points:

SOLUTION:

Scenario 1:
Nawazish is a 1 year old baby. Her parents are the only support which she has. At this stage, Nawazish feels afraid when a stranger is present in the room but she becomes stable as soon as she sees either of her parents.

Stage (1*5)
Basic trust vs. Mistrust (Oral sensor stage)

Justification (3*5)

This stage begins at birth continues to approximately 18 months of age. During this stage, the infant is uncertain about the world in which they live, and looks towards their primary caregiver for stability and consistency of care. If the care the infant receives is consistent, predictable and reliable, they will develop a sense of trust which will carry with them to other relationships, and they will be able to feel secure even when threatened.

Scenario 2:
Kareem is a 10 years old boy. He has several friends of the same age. Kareem has recently won a race for his school and feels that this achievement has increased his self- esteem.

Stage (1*5)
Industry vs. Inferiority

Justification (3*5)

Industry vs. Inferiority is the stage in which children enter into the greater society beyond the family for the first time. If they succeed in navigating this stage, then they are able to develop a meaningful social role to give back to society. They will become industrious, namely, productive and contributing members to society as a whole. If they do not succeed at this stage, they may develop low self-esteem, culminating in a sense of inferiority, namely, viewing themselves as unproductive and possibly not fully useful members of society.

Scenario 3:
Dawood is a 19 years old young man. He is extremely popular amongst his friends. Dawood has decided to become a psychologist because the rest of his class was opting for to become engineers, doctors and lawyers. In order to become independent, Dawood even started earning and stopped take financial support from his parents.

Stage (1*5)
Intimacy vs. isolation

Justification (3*5)

During this stage, the major conflict centers on forming intimate, loving relationships with other people. During this stage, we begin to share ourselves more intimately with others.
Successful completion of this stage can result in happy relationships and a sense of commitment, safety, and care within a relationship.

Scenario 4:
Ayesha is a 45 years old woman. She is a mother of 3 children. She also runs a small NGO where she helps other poor women by providing them with opportunities for learning and making their lives better.

Stage (1*5)
Adulthood generativity vs. stagnation (middle adulthood)

Justification (3*5)

We give back to society through raising our children, being productive at work, and becoming involved in community activities and organizations. Through generativity we develop a sense of being a part of the bigger picture.
Success leads to feelings of usefulness and accomplishment, while failure results in shallow involvement in the world.

Scenario 5:
Farhan is 60 years old
man. He is now retired from his job and spends most of his time gardening at his home. He often contemplates on his past

Stage (1*5)
Ego integrity vs. despair

Justification (3*5)

This stage begins at approximately age 65 and ends at death. It is during this time that we contemplate our accomplishments and can develop integrity if we see ourselves as leading a successful life.
