       Understand deficiencies of different single gene defects

       Learn the concept of natural selection




Question No.01:                                                                                                                 (15)

Read the provided cases carefully at first and then answer the questions given at the end. 


  1.  Ahmer, a nine years old boy is mentally retarded. His physical and intellectual

development was not according to his age. He exhibited severe behavioral problems. He had severe skin problems due to insufficient amount of proteins.

  1.  In the initial six months, Ahmed’s development was normal but gradually there was a

decline. Due to weakness in muscles, he used to find difficulty in motor coordination. After six months, his symptoms got severe and he started showing the signs of seizures.  He died at the age of three.

  1.  Sana a 25 years old young lady with severe behavioral problems like lack of empathy,

less interest in developing friendship, failure to initiate any task, desired to live in

isolation etc. She had also suicidal ideation and tried to commit suicide many times. Besides behavioral problems, she also found difficulty in proper coordination of movements.


  1.  Identify what particular problem/disease/disorder has been discussed in each scenario.
  2.  Explore the genes/chromosomes and abnormalities in these genes/chromosomes which led to that particular problem.




Marking Scheme: 5 marks for each scenario

 Explain the concept of natural selection given by Darwin with the help of an example.
