SEMESTER Spring 2017
Introduction to Sociology (SOC101)
Assignment No. 03
Due Date: 25-07-2017 Assignment marks: 20
Gender socialization
The Aim of the Assignment is to:
 Familiarize students with the role of indirect socialization in gender specific
 Enhance student’s understanding regarding the issues related to marriage and
family relationship in everyday life.
Background Information
It is a common understanding that male and female behavior is socially constructed and
in some way cultures through social institutions endorse these practices. In traditional
societies like Pakistan these differences are more evident and socializing agents reinforce
the existing patterns of thought and behavior. Children being the important members of
societies also internalize these expected roles. With reference to the given scenario
attempt the following assignment.
Task you have to Perform:
You are required to visit two toys/stationary stores nearby your home/vicinity and
observe the types of gender specific toys/stationary items in these stores. After in-depth
observation, you are required to collect information on the following:
Types of toys/stationary for boys. (Enlist any five).
Types of toys/stationary for girls. (Enlist any five).
Suppose a toy or stationary item is made for both genders i.e. boys and girls, how it
would be different in its outlook for male or female? Enlist three differences.
(Marks 2.5+2.5+3= 8)
In your opinion, what gender role messages does this information convey to children? What
sort of gender role messages would your children be receiving through this indirect
socialization? (7 marks)
In near past, a common practice was observed in Pakistani villages that at the time of
marriage, relationships were established on the basis of caste and social bonding rather than
considering level of education of groom and bride. In certain cases, due to more social
mobility of males, they were highly educated whereas females were less educated. Still, this
practice is observable in villages. Do you think education level of spouse affects the
marriage relationship of both partners and how? In case of agreement or disagreement,
explain logically. (05)
Only in the case of Assignment, 24 hours extra / grace period after the due
date is usually available to overcome uploading difficulties which may be
faced by the students on last date. This extra time should only be used to
meet the emergencies and above mentioned due dates should always be
treated as final to avoid any inconvenience.
