Research Methods (STA630)

Due date: November 26th, 2019

Topic: The Research Process

Marks: 5

Objective of the activity

To familiarize the students with the research process.

Learning outcome

After attempting this GDB, students will be able to analyze the data collection tool/ways.

The premise

UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund) aims to ensure the world, a safe and inclusive place to nurture the children. It works to develop the policies and services to guard their rights. There are millions of severe cases where a child becomes the victim of several types of violence, abuse, bullying, and exploitation etc. There is an utmost need to modify the current rules and regulations to ensure child protection in every aspect. Children are more vulnerable to such exploitations (based on their gender, race, ethnicity or other socio-economic status). Children having disabilities, are orphans, or having single parent, are poor or belongs to the minorities, are at additional risks which make them suffer (mentally, physically, psychologically) for the rest of their lives.

UNICEF is therefore working on various projects to strengthen the child protection system especially in Pakistan. There is sufficient evidence of the latest wave of child abuse in Pakistan which raised several questions regarding prevention of exploitation and abuse in one way or the other.

In Pakistan, there are various working groups, NGOs, and other public or private institutions to work on child protection system. For this purpose, several research teams were organized by Federal Bureau of Statistics. One of them was under the supervision of Mr. Armani, Deputy Director, to do research on the above-mentioned issue in the districts of upper Punjab. Mr. Armani briefed his research team about the said research project. After working of two months, the research team submitted the research proposal. In research design, it was mentioned that it will be specifically focused on the single parents of victimized children in the districts of upper Punjab. This research will be conducted for a thoughtful analysis over regular time intervals.

Point of Discussion:

After reading the above-mentioned case, you are advised to suggest the most appropriate data collection tool/way. Discuss your stance with at least two justifications.

Note: For acquiring the relevant knowledge, do not rely only on handouts but watch the course video lectures and read additional material available online or in any other mode.
