Application of Natural Science Methods into Social Science

There has been a long-standing debate among the scholars about the application of natural science principles to explore, understand and predict the laws which govern social sphere of human life. Proponents of natural sciences argues that natural sciences methods could be employed in social sciences to explore the realities of social realm as nature of reality is same as in natural sciences. Its underlying paradigm is positivism in which reality is viewed as an external entity waiting to be explored by the researchers. It is called out siders perspective and the aim of positivists is to unveil universal laws which govern this universe.

Whereas, its opponents argue that nature of social reality is different from physical matter, energy and cosmos therefore it is unjust to apply the methods of natural sciences to measure the social life of humans. Reality is not external, out there waiting to be identified rather it is socially constructed by the social actors. Reality is not universal, and no universal laws govern social sphere of humans rather it is contextual. This stance is supported by interpretivism paradigm which negates that no universal reality exists in social scope of life.

Q. What do you think; nature of reality in social sciences is same as in natural sciences or
different? Give five logical arguments in favor or against this stance.

Ans
I think nature of reality in social sciences is different as in natural sciences because
1. Natural science stresses quantitative research
2. In social there is no emotional linkage between the researcher and the object of study.
3. Natural science tends to be based on repeatable experimentation based on repeatable
observation of natural phenomenon.
4. Social science tends to be based on non-repeatable experimentation and the process
of observing very often interrupts the social interactions attempting to be observed.
And the subject is the human animal in society.
5. In Social science Research we commonly find subjectivity. In natural science you will
always see objectivity.
